RIBBED SLAB:
Benefits Over conventional (solid slab)
1.) 50% savings on cost of concrete floor in comparison to conventional slab (solid slab).
2.) 60% savings on Y12 reinforcement iron.
3.) 50% reduction in self weight of floor slab against the normal conventional slab (Solid slab).
4. Due to reduction in weight of Ribbed slab by 50%, there is additional savings on floor beams reinforcement irons, columns, and foundations. As these structural members are now carrying lesser dead load/self weight.
5.)At least 50% additional savings on labour works for iron and concrete casting of floor slab.
RIBBED SLAB is very economical and stronger than the conventional slab called solid slab.
Due to reduction in self weight of Ribbed floor, it can span a very large distance more than solid floor slab without deflection, and without having to introduce internal columns to divide floor areas.
For Instance, we have design and built a 9m x 18m conference hall floor area without introduction of internal columns. We cleared all internal columns providing a clear space.
Try measure 9m by 18m floor area, only then you will better understand how strong Ribbed floor slab is.
This is something conventional slab cannot achieved. If you are to construct this large area with conventional, you will have to introduce internal columns and beams to divide the floor area but with Ribbed floor, there is no need for that. Also it will not be economical to use conventional for this large area.
