7 Days? 15 Days? 30 Days? 🤔

When buying CCTV, most people focus on:

🌙 Night vision
🤖 AI features

But there’s one important question people often forget:

👉 “How long do you want to keep your recordings?”

Because when something happens, you may not discover it immediately.

🟢 7 DAYS — Basic Coverage

Suitable for:

🏠 Homes
🏪 Small shops
🏢 Small offices

Good when incidents are usually noticed quickly.

Example:
Someone damages your gate today → you probably check the footage today or tomorrow.

For many simple installations, 7 days may be enough.

Two CCTV systems with the same number of cameras may need very different storage capacities.

📊 Video bitrate
🗜️ Compression — H.264 / H.265 / H.265+

💡 Simple Example

Imagine you have:

📷 8 cameras

Recording continuously for:

🟢 7 days
🟡 15 days
🔵 30 days

Going from 7 days → 30 days means storing more than 4× as much recording time.

And if you also upgrade:

2MP → 8MP

your storage requirement can increase further, depending on the bitrate and recording settings.

So:

❌ “8 cameras = 4TB HDD”

is NOT a reliable rule.

Storage should be calculated based on the actual system settings.

🤖 Can AI Help Save Storage?

Yes — depending on the system.

Instead of recording everything at maximum settings continuously, some systems can use:

🚶 Motion/event recording
👤 Human detection
🚗 Vehicle detection

to focus recordings or events on activity that matters.

Modern compression technologies can also significantly reduce storage requirements compared with older video compression.

But remember:

Maximum storage saving shouldn’t be the only goal.

The footage still needs to be good enough when you actually need evidence.

And some projects may require 60, 90 days or even longer, depending on operational or regulatory requirements.

⚠️ One Important Reminder

A CCTV hard disk doesn’t simply become “full” and stop recording.

Most systems are configured to overwrite the oldest footage automatically.

So if your system stores 15 days…

Day 16 arrives ➡️ the oldest recordings begin disappearing.

That’s why you should decide your required retention period before choosing the hard disk.

More cameras + Higher resolution + Longer recording = More storage.

Don’t ask only:

❌ “How big is the hard disk?”

Ask:

✅ “How many days of usable CCTV footage will this system actually keep?”
