Our Partner, Agalya J. Munusamy, was invited to speak at the SIS Forum roundtable discussion, “Dari Perintah ke Pembayaran: Menutup Jurang Penguatkuasaan Nafkah Isteri dan Anak di Malaysia.”

Speaking from a civil family law perspective, Agalya contributed to a broader discussion on the challenges divorced mothers face in enforcing maintenance orders and how the existing framework could be strengthened to ensure that court-ordered maintenance translates into actual and timely payments.

The roundtable also provided an important platform to explore the potential establishment of a federal agency framework to ease the enforcement burden on mothers and enhance the effectiveness of maintenance collection.

MWKA thanks SIS Forum (Malaysia) for the invitation and for bringing together legal practitioners, policymakers and civil society stakeholders to discuss meaningful and sustainable reforms. We are pleased that Agalya had the opportunity to contribute to this important conversation.

Earlier this month, our Senior Associate Jeremy Balang attended the 28th Family Medicine Scientific Conference in Kuantan, organised by the Malaysian Family Medicine Specialists’ Association and hosted by FMS Pahang.

Jeremy spoke at the Medical Ethics and Law Symposium on “Medicolegal Challenges in General Practice: A Lawyer’s Perspective”, sharing practical insights from recent Malaysian judgments arising from primary care.

Addressing family medicine practitioners from across the country, Jeremy discussed issues directly relevant to general practice, including the importance of proper documentation, patient communication, and maintaining clear, contemporaneous medical records.

The discussion highlighted how, in medicolegal matters, a sound clinical decision may be difficult to defend years later if the records do not adequately reflect what was considered, what was done, and what was communicated to the patient.

We thank the organising committee for the invitation and the opportunity to contribute to this meaningful discussion at the intersection of medicine, ethics and law.
