Do you know what is this?
In general this is a damper that we usually find it installed in the ducting system.
Every damper has a different name although they look alike. With this reason, M&E consultant would specify its functionality in the drawing so that whether the contractor or building engineers are able to identify throughout its maintenance interval.
The dampers could be classified with its function and named as follow:
1) Volume Control Damper, VCD, to control the airflow in the particular duct to serve certain area.
2) Fire Damper, FD, uses to resist fire to spread from one place to another in order to secure the property, equipment and lives in the building.
3) Non-Return Damper, NRD, to oppose the back draft air by returning to the duct/source, this is the reason ppl also named it Back draft Damper.
4) Pressure Relief Damper, this usually found in Isolation room in the hospital, clean room & building pressurization system.
The excessive airflow would be ''pizz'' (release) from the pressure duct to maintain the design pressure in the building.
If you are the building owner, you shall understand a proper design in airflow could assist you to improve the Indoor Air Quality, however select the right product with proper designing flow by integrating it into Building Automation Mode would further save the energy consumption of the building.
