How Often Should You Clean Your Aircon Filter?
And Why Can Cleaning It the WRONG Way Increase Your Electricity Bill? 💸❄️

Many people only clean their aircon when it stops cooling properly.

But in general, your aircon filter should be given a basic cleaning about once every 2 weeks — especially if your home has more dust, is near the kitchen, or has smoking or incense-burning habits.

❌ Why does a dirty filter affect electricity consumption?

Your air conditioner continuously draws in indoor air while operating.

When the filter is heavily clogged with dust, airflow is restricted and air circulation becomes less efficient. The compressor may need to run for longer periods to reach the desired temperature, which can lead to higher electricity consumption.

⚠️ One common mistake: Washing the dusty filter immediately!

When dust comes into contact with water, it can turn into muddy residue and stick between the filter mesh, making it even harder to clean.

✅ The RIGHT way to clean your aircon filter

STEP 1｜Vacuum First 🧹
Use a vacuum cleaner gently on the front side of the filter to remove loose dust.

STEP 2｜Wash with Water 💦
After most of the dust has been removed, rinse the filter with clean or lukewarm water, from the back/cleaner side towards the front.

STEP 3｜Dry Completely ☀️
Allow the filter to dry completely before reinstalling it.

🧽 Don't Forget the Aircon Casing!

Most wall-mounted air conditioners take in air mainly from the top of the indoor unit, so the top surface is often where dust accumulates the most.

Recommended cleaning order:

① Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to remove heavy dust.
② Wipe thoroughly with a well-wrung damp cloth.

⚠️ Be Careful with the Metal Fins!

The thin metal fins inside the air conditioner are part of the evaporator coil.

They are very delicate. Do not press, hit or scrub them aggressively, as they can easily bend and affect airflow.

When removing the air direction louver, be careful with the plastic clips too. Older plastic parts can become brittle and may break if excessive force is applied.

🍳 Aircon Near the Kitchen?

If your aircon is installed near the kitchen, or if there is regular smoking or incense burning indoors, the filter may accumulate yellowish, greasy residue.

In this situation, water and vacuuming alone may not be enough.

👉 Use a mild neutral detergent, to help remove greasy residue.

⭐ Remember:
Aircon filter: Basic cleaning about every 2 weeks
Deep aircon cleaning: Depends on usage and the level of dirt

Proper cleaning isn't just about keeping your aircon ❄️ cold.

It's also about maintaining good airflow and efficiency, avoiding unnecessary energy consumption, and helping extend the lifespan of your air conditioner.

为什么「洗错方法」反而可能让电费更贵？💸❄️

很多人以为冷气不冷了，才需要洗。

其实，隔尘网建议大约每 2 周进行一次基础清洁，尤其是家里灰尘比较多、靠近厨房、有人抽烟或点香的环境，更需要勤清洁。

❌ 为什么隔尘网太脏会影响耗电？

冷气运转时，需要不断吸入室内空气。

当隔尘网被厚厚的灰尘堵住，进气量减少、空气循环受阻，冷气效率就会下降，压缩机可能需要更长时间运转来达到设定温度，电费自然可能增加。

⚠️ 但最常见的错误，就是「直接拿水冲！」
灰尘遇到水后，很容易在网格之间形成泥状污垢，反而更难清洗。

✅ 正确清洗隔尘网的方法

STEP 1｜先吸尘 🧹
用吸尘机朝隔尘网正面轻轻吸走表面浮尘。

STEP 2｜再用水洗 💦
大部分灰尘吸走后，再用清水或温水，从背面（较干净的一面）往正面冲洗。

STEP 3｜彻底晾干 ☀️
清洗后让隔尘网完全干透，再装回冷气机。

🧽 冷气机外壳也不要忽略！

冷气主要从机身顶部进气，所以顶部往往是最容易积灰的地方。

建议：

① 先用吸尘机＋刷頭吸走厚尘
② 再用扭干的湿布擦拭干净

⚠️ 小心！里面的金属片不能乱碰！

打开面板后看到的金属薄片，是散热鰭片（Evaporator Coil Fins）。

这些铝片非常薄，不要用力压、撞击或粗暴刷洗，否则容易变形，影响空气流通。

拆卸导风板时，也要注意塑料卡扣。冷气使用多年后，塑料容易老化，太大力可能会断裂。

🍳 厨房附近的冷气怎么办？

如果冷气靠近厨房，或者室内有抽烟、点香的习惯，隔尘网上可能会出现黄褐色、油腻的污垢。

这种情况下，单靠清水＋吸尘机通常很难清干净。

👉 可以使用中性清洁剂，帮助去除油污。

⭐ 记住这个简单原则：

隔尘网：约每 2 周清洁一次
冷气深层清洗：视使用环境及污垢程度而定

正确清洁，不只是为了「冷」❄️
也是为了让冷气维持良好效率、减少不必要的耗电，并延长使用寿命。
