INHABITING THE FOREST — ALASKA
Set within the boreal forests near Nenana, Alaska, where the vastness of the landscape makes human presence almost imperceptible, Inhabiting the Forest explores an essential way of living within the wilderness.
A series of small, austere cabins offers only what is necessary: a place to rest, cook, read, contemplate, and witness the passing of time. Rather than domesticating the territory, the architecture quietly recedes, allowing the forest to define the experience.
A precise modular system of steel and glass allows the cabins to grow over time, gently following the changing topography like a path through the trees.
The architecture becomes quieter, so the forest can become louder.

A ground.
A roof.
A shadow.
The house seeks the simplicity of una enramada—a simple shelter beneath a canopy. Not as an image of traditional architecture, but as an elemental condition of inhabiting: being beneath a shadow, protected from rain and sun, while the landscape lives around you.
The horizon is not a view placed inside the house.
It is the condition that gives rise to its conception.

We do not see space; we touch it with our gaze.
The penumbra caresses the wood, and light settles like silent dust upon surfaces. Here, the body understands before the mind: scale, calm, the gravity of shelter.
Architecture does not present itself as an image, but as a haptic experience. Emptiness is not empty; it is filled with presence, suspended time, slow breathing.
That restrained gesture—the table, the stone, the distance—returns us to the origin: to dwell is to feel.
