I know some of us have heard the phrase of life is like a carousel... A cycle of ups and downs, of change and turns.
In this watercolor, I didn't wanted to make a portrait of a woman, I wanted to portray release. Everything is in motion except her because she is the axis of her own carousel. The leaves are swirling, they represent that chaos we all have experienced, while her body and dress are those roots that ground us, that keeps us in balance. She is the eye of the storm.
Lately I've introduced the idea of the butterfly as transformation, it was part of the process that symbolizes that shift to what we will become. And then, the light, probably the element I've been chasing for years... for me, rather than coming from the outside, I see it as emerging from her.
I could say even creating the painting was its own carousel. It began in darkness and in an unexpected turn it was completely changed. That movement and that shift, was exactly what gave this watercolor its name, "Carousel".
