From Sunflower Production to Local Value Addition

HOPMAC has embarked on a sunflower outgrower and local processing initiative, currently working with about 35 smallholder farmers, including women and young farmers.

In 2026, participating farmers produced over 4,000 kg of sunflower, generating approximately 1,000 litres of cooking oil. Farmers have been able to take cooking oil home for household consumption, while selling surplus creates an additional income opportunity.

Many farmers are also integrating sunflower with groundnuts, soybeans, sweet potatoes and Irish potatoes, enabling them to diversify production and generate more value from the same piece of land.

With growing interest for the coming season, HOPMAC plans to register more farmers and expand the programme by approximately 150%.

Our next step is to strengthen local processing capacity. With a proposed USD 150,000 investment in sunflower processing machinery, we aim to aggregate more produce, support more farmers, create jobs and retain greater value within Malawi’s agricultural value chain.

From farmers’ fields to local processing, we are building a more inclusive sunflower value chain—one that turns production into value and value into livelihoods. 🌻🇲🇼

Kenya–Malawi Youth Tree Nursery Exchange

🇰🇪🇲🇼 FROM KENYA TO MALAWI: LEARNING, SHARING & GROWING TOGETHER

The Kenya–Malawi Youth Tree Nursery Exchange, through the collaboration between KENAFF and FUM, brought young agripreneurs together for practical, peer-to-peer learning and knowledge exchange.

HOPMAC was proud to host the Kenyan delegation at our farm and nursery, sharing practical experiences in nursery production, seedling management, agribusiness, markets and enterprise development while learning from their experiences in Kenya.

Through FUM and YANE, the exchange went beyond nursery production, creating connections, partnerships and opportunities for young farmers to learn from one another and build a stronger future for African agriculture.

We also celebrate the support from Hermes Akademie, with support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).

More than an exchange, it was an investment in young people, ideas and the future of agriculture.

From knowledge to action. From seedlings to possibilities.

Kudos to the Hopmac team for providing mentorship, guidance, and a practical learning environment.

Kudos to our community and church elders for the continued support and encouragement.

Proudly celebrates Steven Richard Mathunda, a student from Vocational Technical College under Teveta Malawi , who has successfully completed his eight-month industry attachment at HOPMAC from January to August 2026.

During his time with us, Steven demonstrated strong interest and practical skills in seed sowing for both vegetables and fruits, nursery management, and seedling production, contributing significantly to the production of quality seedlings at our farm. If you're to buy seedlings from our farm this season know that most seedlings passed through his artistic hands.

Beyond his technical contribution, Steven brought enthusiasm, teamwork and a positive spirit to the workplace. His commitment and willingness to learn made his time at HOPMAC meaningful and memorable.

We sincerely appreciate Steven for the knowledge he shared, the skills he developed, and the contribution he made to our nursery operations.

Congratulations, Stephen, and best wishes as you continue building your career in horticulture.
