When it comes to getting things done, taking the lead is crucial; otherwise, you risk merely following along with tasks left unfinished. Despite seldom sharing work-related updates, I feel compelled to reflect and shed light on the importance of leadership and ex*****on.
Today, I'd like to delve into a pertinent example from a current contract I'm overseeing, highlighting the role of leadership in navigating challenges and achieving goals.
The Contract:
Our objective is to provide portable water to a remote location beyond the reach of ESCOM and the Water Board.
My Contributions:
- Designing a solar-powered portable water system tailored for domestic use.
- Developing a comprehensive Bill of Quantities.
- Procuring necessary materials and assembling the required human resources.
- Engaging a Contract Engineer.
- Ensuring effective Project Management.
While these responsibilities typically require a team effort, I often find myself shouldering these tasks alone. As for the intricacies of segregation of duties, we leave that discussion to the accountants.
Initiating the project demanded dedicated time to craft a suitable system design, complete with component recommendations. Subsequently, managing the fabrication of a water tank tower presented its own set of challenges. Coordinating with welders required meticulous attention to ensure seamless progress, compounded by the logistical complexities of daily travel by the fabrication team to our premises.
Simultaneously, I supervised excavation activities at the site to prepare the tower's foundation. Once completed, managing the transportation of the tower and a team of riggers to the site posed another logistical puzzle. With a team of novices, I assumed a hands-on approach, leading by example through guidance and physical labor—often finding myself on top of the tower, shouting instructions to the ground, a scenario that required both nerve and clarity.
In summary, effective leadership isn't merely about issuing directives but about rolling up one's sleeves, navigating challenges firsthand, and inspiring a team towards excellence, even amidst daunting heights both literal and figurative.
