Ex-Or Hi-Bay helps leading high street retailer save £30,000 a year in energy costs
Jun 07, 2011
A leading UK high street retailer is on track to make energy savings of £30,000 a year at its half a million sq ft distribution warehouse in the Midlands. This is thanks to the installation of lighting control systems from Ex-Or, the Honeywell-owned lighting management specialist.

The retailer took over the business park unit early in 2010 and the refurbishment of the lighting system was undertaken by M & E contractors Imtech G&H Ltd.

Phase 1 of the contract comprised the upgrading of the lighting from SON discharge lamps units to more efficient 80w fluorescents installed in blocks of four in high bay fittings, controlled from a high level bus bar.

Imtech G&H project engineer Ian Pattenden explained that Phase 1 involved that part of the warehouse used as its national seasonal stock distribution centre.

“Because of the seasonal nature of the products, and the fact that at certain times of the year there would be very few personnel in that part of the unit, it was vital that all unnecessary use of lighting would be automatically eliminated.

“The SON discharge lamps were not capable of being controlled or dimmed effectively, nor did they suit the high density racking layout which extended upwards to 15 metres. We needed a minimum of 200 lux lighting level with the ability to control high level lighting.”

Ex-Or Hi-Bay LightSpot presence-detecting controls, specially designed to eliminate unnecessary use of lighting in buildings with greater ceiling heights, formed the basis of the lighting control system in the warehouse.

Distribution hubs and storage facilities such as this are increasing in height to enable operators to maximise the value of the land footprint occupied by the building. However, stacking higher can lead to higher energy costs - in particular, large internal areas can remain lit despite being unoccupied for much of the time.

Like all LightSpot systems, Hi-Bay employs presence detection technology which enables the lighting to respond to any movement that occurs, however small, when the monitored area is occupied. Anyone entering the monitored area automatically activates the lighting and subsequently sustains it by the movements they make as they go about their normal working activity. When the area is vacated, the lights automatically switch off.

In any warehouse and storage application, especially where there are a large number of racking aisles, precise lighting control is needed. The Ex-Or Hi-Bay LightSpot detectors provide a narrow angle of view despite the fact they are mounted at great height. This means that much smaller and more precisely targeted internal areas can be monitored by Hi-Bay so that lighting can be delivered where it is needed with much greater precision.

Despite the height at which they are mounted - the internal height of the Midlands warehouse is 18 metres - Hi-Bay LightSpot controls can be easily programmed from ground level by using an infrared hand-held programmer. This significantly reduces commissioning and re-commissioning time costs and eliminates any health and safety risks associated with working as such heights.

In a further enhancement, the Hi-Bay LightSpot detectors employed at the warehouse were dual-output, which allows the testing of emergency lighting to be carried out without the expense of a special, single-function controller or any hard wiring. The remote control hand-held programmer is used for the emergency lighting testing.

“Energy saving and reduced installation costs were the main drivers for installing Ex-Or lighting control in this first phase,” said Ian Pattenden. “The high street retailer has a commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and to employing the latest methods of energy conservation in their facilities.”

In terms of cost, the retailer has an annual lighting bill of £150,000 for this warehouse facility. At a conservative estimate, the employment of Ex-Or lighting control is delivering a 20 per cent reduction in electricity consumption. Taking the cost of the lighting control installation into account, this is giving the retailer a payback period of three years. Payback is the period of time it takes for the system to pay for itself thanks to the resulting energy cost savings. And the Ex-Or system will continue to deliver energy cost savings over the life of the installation.

MK Electric and Philips team up to produce energy-efficient dimmable LED lighting
Jul 31, 2012 - Market leaders MK Electric and Philips have joined forces to offer a practical solution to overcome the industry’s long-standing issues in producing reliable LED lighting offerings that operate effectively with dimmable switches.
MK’s Design Service has produced a specialist dimmer that works with the Philips MASTER LED product range, specifically 7W MASTER LEDspot GU10 MV, 7W MASTER LEDspot GU10 MV DimTone, 12W MASTER LEDbulb and 8W MASTER LEDbulb DimTone.
The award winning LED lamps can be paired with dimmers from two of MK Electric’s most popular ranges, Logic Plus – the classic, white plastic design – and Edge – the stylish, functional, slim profile design. Both ranges are rated 8W-48W to operate effectively with the MASTER LED lamps.

According to McKinsey & Company LED lighting is forecast to be the dominant technology in domestic and commercial lighting by 20151. The main reason being the significant energy savings – up to 80% compared with incandescent and halogen lamps when using Philips’ MASTER LED range. The long lifetime of up to 45,000 burning hours, compared to 10-15,000 of traditional halogen lamps also results in significantly lower maintenance costs.
“The collaboration between Philips and MK Electric has resulted in a market-leading product that fills an important gap in the industry,” according to Jason Ng, Marketing Communications Specialist for MK Electric.
“It’s one of the first times that a lighting manufacturer and a wiring accessories manufacturer have married their expertise to overcome an industry issue like this one. As a result of this collaboration contractors and designers clearly know which dimmers can reliably dim which ranges of LED lighting – it’s a sought-after answer.”

Duncan Chamberlain, Director of Trade, Philips UK comments: “The sales of MASTER LED lamps to date have been phenomenal and are used in a variety of different applications.
Ensuring that all our customers have the best user experience possible is really important to us so taking the leadership to offer clear guidance on dimming compatibilities was an obvious step.“ Philips LED spot ranges have a 40,000 hour lifetime while the bulb ranges have a 25,000 hour lifetime. The DimTone ranges in the 8W MASTER LEDbulb and 7W MASTER LEDspot change colour when dimmed from true warm white to a warmer red tone, making it very easy for users to change the ambience of a room to suit their moods – simply by dimming.
All of Philips’ LED lights are environmentally friendly with no mercury included and all materials fulfil European directive 2002/95/EC.
The LED Dimmers from MK Electric are just the first two in a wider range of LED Dimmers that are due to be launched at the end of the year.

MK Electric Contributes to South African Research Ship Bound for The Coldest Journey On Earth
Sep 24, 2012 - MK Electric – the UK’s leading manufacturer of wiring devices and accessories – has helped in the development of a South African research ship that is due to cross Antarctica this winter with Sir Ranulph Fiennes at the helm.
The ice-strengthened ship, ‘SA Agulhas’ will leave London on 6 December 2012 bound for the first-ever trans-Antarctic winter expedition, ‘The Coldest Journey on Earth’. It contains wiring devices from MK Electric’s best-selling Logic Plus range – made from a high grade thermoset material which has an inherent antimicrobial property – as well as the Sentry range of circuit protection consumer units and Prestige 3D cable management.
The Coldest Journey will also attempt to raise USD10 million for Seeing is Believing, a global charitable initiative to fight avoidable blindness. Plus, during their sea voyage, the team will undertake a number of scientific tasks to provide unique data on marine life, oceanography and meteorology. Using the very latest technological innovations, this epoch-making journey will pave the way for a new dawn in Antarctic, year-round exploration.

Of the Antarctic traverse, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Expedition Leader of The Coldest Journey, said: “We will stretch the limits of human endurance. Britain and the Commonwealth has a strong heritage of exploration, from Captain Cook 300 years ago to the present day. As such, it is fitting that a Commonwealth team should be the first to fulfil this last great polar expedition.
“It is a unique opportunity to carry out a number of scientific tasks in the extreme polar environment, which will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the true effects of global warming on the Antarctic continent.”
Jason Ng, Marketing Communications Specialist for MK Electric, added: “We are hugely excited to be a sponsor for a project that is not only scientifically ground-breaking, but also raising awareness and support for such a worthwhile cause. As soon as we heard about the impact this expedition is going to have, donating our products to help build the ship and bring the team one step closer to their goal was a no-brainer.
“One of the most important practices for us is that we manufacture in Great Britain, for Great Britain. Now we have the opportunity to support Britain in a completely new way – through being part of one of the bravest and pioneering expeditions of all time led by Britain and the Commonwealth.”
Previously, the furthest any expedition has ever ventured into Antarctica during the winter is 60 miles. On this forthcoming journey, Sir Ranulph and his team will aim to cover 2,000 miles in six months, crossing the polar plateau at an average height of 10,000ft above sea level.
