Angie Sciberras is a freelance architect fascinated by nature and intrigued by the process of client-oriented architectural design. Originally from Attard, Angie graduated from the University of Malta in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Civil Engineering. The work she has been involved in is mainly design-based, and this has been both as part of established local offices, as well
as an individual architect. Angie’s interest in nature is reflected in her studies and projects, with her dissertation having dealt with the interaction between interior and exterior architecture. In February 2015, Angie set up her own architectural practice and works on freelance projects while collaborating with other practitioners from across all fields. The work of our studio is aimed at understanding the clients at hand and designing around their needs whilst always beingled by design principles that reflect our creative approach. Our philosophy is based on communication with the client and which reflects a close relationship between designer and user. Projects include residential and commercial pursuits, however since inception we have been very involved in the design of efficient workspaces, particularly within the gaming industry. In understanding the needs of this workforce, and adapting according to the company’s dynamic, each project takes on its own character. Whilst appreciating the foreign origins of most of our collaborators, we feel it is important to refer to the Mediterranean influences in the design process. This philosophy is also ingrained within the residential projects we have taken on, which range from space-efficient contemporary apartments, to larger properties where the luxury of outdoor spaces, gardens and terraces were maximised to highlight the potential of someone’s home. This work has included restoration initiatives as well as shell-to-finish projects. Clients have approached us both for small design interventions and larger interior renovations of their whole residence. We are driven towards an architecture that is representative of the client that is being designed for. In discussing with them, visiting the existing site, and understanding the aims of the project, we starts to build the story we hope to deliver through that space. This process integrates external literature, case studies and the results of internal discussion, to take the projects forward. It is through this process that a concept surfaces and slowly grows. Angie’s projects have managed to incorporate comfortable negotiation of space, clever choice of material, and accurate detailing in the subtle finishes she chooses. Design is an iterative process, and in successful projects the client’s needs are in harmony with the final experience of the place. This is an idea we seek to push forward within the local design landscape.
