2nd place 🍅 Competition proposal for Getliņi EKO Public Education Center in the field of waste management

We are incredibly proud of our proposal and the amazing interdisciplinary team behind it. ✨

Society tends to hide waste from view. Yet the Getliņi landfill stands as a physical testament to how much we consume, discard, and forget. It is both the result of our current way of life and a valuable resource for the future.

The core idea behind the Getliņi Public Education Centre is to encourage people to see what has long remained hidden - the flow of materials, the circulation of resources, the generation of energy, and the opportunities that lie ahead.

The architecture and exhibition are both founded on the circle - a universal symbol of circularity and the cyclical nature of resources. Within this cycle, beginnings and endings merge into a continuous process of transformation. The circular form serves as the exhibition's philosophical foundation, reinforcing its central message across multiple scales and dimensions.

It was a great opportunity to share a closer look at what we’ve been working on and the ideas shaping this place.

A kitchen designed with every resident in mind 🐾

A functional furniture that helps keep the space organised. Integrated feeding bowls for the cat and a discreetly concealed litter box are seamlessly incorporated into the design.

Materials include a stainless steel worktop, veneered oak, and aluminium elements, creating a balanced mix of durability and warmth.

Regardless of scale, we love finding solutions to unexpected design needs.

Touches to Radošā rūpnīca Veldze – former soft drink factory in central Riga, now an open work environment for creative studios, including our own new home.

Our approach focused on keeping the existing layers alive, highlighted through carefully chosen interventions.

Glass blocks introduce natural light into the central corridor, creating a subtle rhythm along the circulation space. New doors, integrating reclaimed upper window elements, act as contemporary insertions within the existing fabric. Side windows foster visual connections and interaction between separate tenants.

Continuing the topic about Dabas aizsardzības pārvalde announced concept design competition without prizes — an unprecedented case in our experience — NOONSOON architect Liena Šiliņa shared her perspective on competition practices on Latvijas Radio 3 programme “Kāpēc Dizains?”.
