Destruction of part the Inner-City gate of Kotte resulted in the formation of the Kotte Heritage Foundation
In January 2015 it was revealed that the Archaeological Department (AD) has given the approval to ‘Prime Land’ to develop the site for a housing project. Prasad Fonseka who has researched on the monuments of Kotte, objected and was able to get the work suspended. The AD sent a team and did a
n excavation, when they would have sent a surveyor to identify the site. Since it had been built on a natural cabook mound, they could not find anything. Ignoring the survey map, the approval was granted to demolish the site. Now the eastern section of the gate is completely lost. Consequent to that the ‘Kotte Heritage Foundation’ was formed on 09/05/2015 with the leadership of Prasad Fonseka and with the support of the residents of Kotte, including the descendants of the Kotteites lived during Kotte Period. The other participants of the first discussion were Terrance Rodrigo, Lakshman Perera, Dr. RG Bulathsinhala, W D Mahilal and Ishan Wiratunga. The prime objective of the Kotte Heritage Foundation(KHF) is protecting the monuments still left in Kotte.
