Proposed Housing Project @ Kaudana, Mount Lavinia
This urban housing project reinterprets Sri Lankan tropical modernism, blending climate sensitivity, cultural identity, and contemporary living. Each 1800-square-foot residence with three bedrooms is designed to foster a seamless connection between architecture and nature.
The concept centres on preserving existing trees, allowing buildings to evolve in harmony with the landscape. Courtyards, shaded verandas, and open-plan layouts enhance cross ventilation and natural lighting. At the same time, the living, dining, and kitchen spaces open fluidly to garden courts, dissolving the boundary between indoors and outdoors.
An honest material palette of exposed concrete, timber, clay tiles, and textured finishes establishes warmth and timelessness. Earthy tones and lush greenery create a serene ambience, offering visual and climatic comfort.
Drawing inspiration from traditional Sri Lankan architecture, the facades integrate deep overhangs, screened openings, and passive cooling techniques within a modern aesthetic.
Ultimately, this project offers urban sanctuary homes that feel grounded, open, and tranquil, embodying the essence of tropical modernism and celebrating a lifestyle deeply connected to both place and nature.
