VANNi Architecture Studio We are seeking new ways of minimalism to ensure the connection between people and places

Architect Nadun Gunawardhana graduated from the University of Moratuwa before establishing themself as a practicing Chartered Architect with a range of proposed and ongoing projects. The Architect's beliefs are deeply rooted in merging the simplicity and minimalism of modernist architecture with the tropical needs of the local context and climate. Apprenticeships under esteemed architects such as Patinda Kannangara and Isurunath Bulankufama further influenced and shaped the Architect's vision in promoting sustainability in decision-making and usage of earthy materials to provide the best homely experience for his clients through the careful design process and attention to detail irrespective of the project scale.

This proposed four-bedroom residence in Thambuttegama explores a simple and contemporary approach to tropical living. The design is defined by clean horizontal forms, generous glazing, and warm timber elements that create a welcoming and understated character. Carefully positioned openings bring natural light and ventilation into the interiors while framing views of the surrounding greenery.

The relationship between the house and its landscape is strengthened through sheltered outdoor spaces and a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor areas. An earthy material palette of timber, neutral finishes, and concrete complements the lush setting, creating a calm and comfortable environment. The residence ultimately brings together modern functionality, natural light, and a strong connection to its surroundings.

Earthy and rustic materials are often used to withstand the harsh monsoon climate, while an elevated building structure is adopted to counter the occasional flood from the Attanagalu Oya.
