The world’s FIRST surviving photograph was developed using… BITUMEN!

Back in 1826, French inventor Joseph Nicéphore Niépce created View from the Window at Le Gras, the oldest surviving camera photograph.

But how did bitumen make it possible?

The secret was its reaction to sunlight.

Niépce coated a pewter plate with Bitumen of Judea, placed it inside a camera obscura, and exposed it to sunlight for several hours.

The sunlight hardened the bitumen in the brighter areas, while the softer parts could be washed away with a solvent.

The result?
The world’s first photographic image, a process Niépce called “Heliography” or “Sun Writing.”

From photography to road construction, bitumen has played a fascinating role in human history.

Ever notice how a tiny pothole on a driveway or a small crack in a paved path seems to explode in size after just one rainy season? Most of us ignore minor pavement damage, but the road beneath your wheels is under constant attack.

Why do paved surfaces fail so quickly?

Water Infiltration: Once a small crack appears, it acts as a gateway. Rainwater seeps into the sub-base, softening the ground beneath the surface. When vehicles drive over it, the unsupported asphalt collapses, turning a crack into a crater.

Thermal Stress: Expansion and contraction during temperature fluctuations cause brittle asphalt to fracture. Without flexible maintenance, these fractures widen, leading to surface disintegration.

Back in 1927, Professor Thomas Parnell at the University of Queensland set out to demonstrate to his students that substances appearing completely solid at room temperature are actually extremely viscous fluids. He heated up a sample of pitch (a derivative of bitumen), poured it into a glass funnel, and left it to settle.

Because bitumen is roughly 20 billion to 230 billion times more viscous than water, it flows at an agonizingly slow pace. It takes about a decade for a single drop to form and fall. To this day, the Pitch Drop Experiment holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running laboratory experiment in history, with only nine drops having fallen over nearly a century!

Why is this "slow" feature a superpower for construction?
While this extreme viscosity makes for a fascinating science experiment, it is precisely what makes bitumen an indispensable material for roads and waterproofing:
