This World Coconut Day, some milestones worth remembering:
🥥 Before the 1st century BCE
Historical records indicate that coconut was one of the island’s longstanding natural food resources.
🥥 The Coconut Triangle
The Sri Lankan Coconut Triangle, spanning Kurunegala, Puttalam and Negombo, offered ideal soil and climatic conditions for growing nutrient-rich coconuts and became an important centre of the country’s coconut industry.
🥥 Late 1800s
Coconut increasingly moved beyond local consumption as Sri Lanka developed exports of coconut oil, desiccated coconut and coconut fibre.
🥥 1891-1911
Sri Lanka’s desiccated coconut exports grew from just 189 metric tonnes to 14,493 metric tonnes, reflecting growing international demand.
🥥 Late 1920s
Adamjee Lukmanjee & Sons established its own oil manufacturing plant, Mohammedi Oil Mills in Grandpass while also owning extensive coconut plantations.
🥥 1934
Mohammedi Oil Mills received an award for the Best Manufactured Oil in Sri Lanka, marking an important milestone in our own journey with coconut.
🥥 Early 1970s
Land reforms brought difficulties and large losses of our plantations, but our resilience and ability to adapt strengthened our business in the coconut industry.
🥥 Present
Coconut is finding new relevance as global demand grows for plant-based and health-focused products. Coconut milk is now a popular dairy alternative, while coconut water has expanded into a base for functional and energy beverages.
From cooking and snacking to hydration and plant-based foods, this longstanding ingredient continues to find new uses.
This World Coconut Day, we celebrate a crop that has grown alongside our country’s industries, and one that Adamjee Lukmanjee & Sons is proud to have grown alongside too.
