The Sri Lanka Natural History Society Monthly Lecture Sponsored by George Steuart & Company, held on 14th May, brought together researchers, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts for an insightful discussion on one of Sri Lanka’s most important environmental challenges.

Delivered by Prof. Devaka Kirthi Weerakoon, the lecture explored how a deeper understanding of elephant behaviour may be key to improving coexistence between humans and elephants in Sri Lanka. The session offered valuable perspectives on the historical relationship between people, land use, and elephant movement, while encouraging thoughtful dialogue around conservation and long-term sustainability.

We are grateful to the Sri Lanka Natural History Society for continuing to create spaces that promote knowledge sharing and deeper appreciation of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity. We were also pleased to have our Group Director, Mrs. Varuni Amunugama Fernando, present a token of appreciation to Prof. Weerakoon following the session.

This month’s lecture focuses on a critical question: Are we trying to manage elephants without fully understanding them?

Human elephant conflict remains one of Sri Lanka’s most complex conservation challenges. By exploring the behavioural foundations of elephant movement, interaction, and response, this session invites a shift in how we think about coexistence.
