KATUKELLE JUMMA MASJID — KANDY
A century of faith, heritage & community
Standing in the historic hills of Kandy, Katukelle Jumma Masjid carries a history of worship dating back to 1874, when the land was donated for the establishment of a mosque. Over the decades, it has evolved into an important centre of prayer, education and community life. (Explore Sri Lanka)
Architecturally, the present mosque reflects a contemporary interpretation of Islamic architecture, influenced by Malaysian mosque design while responding to the dramatic hilly landscape of Kandy. Its three-level composition, prominent twin minarets, arched openings and spacious prayer hall create a distinctive skyline within the city. (Explore Sri Lanka)
Inside, the mosaic-lined mihrab, natural light, ventilation and preserved historic mimbar create a dialogue between tradition and modernity. The generous prayer space can accommodate nearly 3,000 worshippers. (Explore Sri Lanka)
More than a mosque, Katukelle represents faith, architecture, education, heritage and interfaith harmony—an important part of Kandy’s multicultural urban identity.
Architecture is not only about buildings;
it is about the memories, faith and communities that give them life.
