It’s 3:47 AM.

Still thinking about the cove, the layers, the warm tone, and that one Pinterest reference that made no sense in real life.

Every lighting designer knows the feeling.

Every architectural project has a rhythm.

For Al Habeeb HQ in KSA, the lighting concept was built around the contrast between straight lines, curved corners, solid walls, and transparent planes.

The light defines what needs to be seen, while allowing the architecture to remain clear.

From IALD Enlighten Europe in Paris, five topics stood out in the way lighting design is moving into 2026.

1. Less light. Better night.
The conversation is shifting from brightness to precision. Better lighting means placing light where it is needed, reducing spill, and allowing darkness to remain part of the urban experience.

2. Design it to be reused.
Circular economy in lighting is becoming part of the design process. Longer lifespans, modular systems, reusable components, retrofitting, and take-back programs are changing how lighting decisions are evaluated.

3. Light is never neutral.
From conversations around meaningful light to the keynote with Ian Ritchie, one idea stood out clearly: lighting choices are never passive. They shape what people see, how they read a space, and what a place communicates.

4. The site changes the plan.
Real conditions matter. Testing, measurements, installation limits, and site knowledge often reveal what simulations alone cannot. The talk “Teaching Clients to See” also reinforced the importance of helping clients understand light beyond drawings and renders.

5. People before presets.
Human-centric lighting is moving beyond standard scenes. Talks like “When Light Becomes a Care Tool” and “Designing Activity-Based Spatial Lighting for Schools” highlighted how lighting should respond to care, learning, behavior, comfort, and the way people actually use a space. Another point raised was the growing number of light sources we are exposed to, from screens to glare-heavy environments, and how this is linked to rising concerns around visual comfort and myopia in children.

Lighting design in 2026 is not about adding more light.
It is about designing more considered light.

Featured in Design Middle East — June 2026.

Our Narjis View project has been featured in the latest issue of Design Middle East, including insights from our Managing Partner, Jinane Abi Khalil, on the lighting approach behind the project.

The feature explores our lighting concept that played on the balance of warm and cool tones to reveal the architectural character and shape the nighttime experience.

A room's mood is written by the light that moves through it.
At 8am, the space feels contained. By noon, it opens. By late afternoon, shadows have shifted the composition entirely.
This is what a skylight does. It doesn't illuminate from a fixed point — it moves through the space, changes with it, and gives it depth, weight, and atmosphere that shift throughout the day.
When light enters from above, it becomes part of the architecture. It stretches proportions, defines materials, and turns an ordinary corridor into something you notice. Not because it's bright, but because it's present.
That's the distinction we always come back to: light as illumination versus light as atmosphere. One lets you see the space. The other makes you feel it.

One of the most common mistakes in lighting specification? Reaching for a louver without knowing exactly what it controls. Each type solves a different problem and using the wrong one is just as bad as using none. We put this together as a practical reference for anyone who specifies light for a living. Because the details are where the craft lives. 💡

Save it. Share it with your team.
