Since its foundation, nabil gholam architects (ngª) has been at the forefront of architecture and planning in the Mediterranean and Arabic world. The practice was set-up by Nabil Gholam in 1994 in Beirut after his extensive work in France, Spain, China and the United States, where he was involved with an internationally acclaimed design firm in the architecture of a wide range of buildings in over 20 countries. Today, nabil gholam architects has grown into an international multidisciplinary team of architects, planners, designers and consultants with a portfolio spanning an extensive list of projects in architecture and urbanism. ngª has attracted attention, winning several competitions and major international awards. In parallel with ngª’s growing reach, a European office has been established in Barcelona in 2006, and later relocated to Seville in 2010 in order to direct the firm’s international ventures. Thanks to its ongoing involvement in a number of prestigious projects in Lebanon, the Middle East and Europe - both through competition and direct commission - ngª has developed into a multi-faceted, award-winning international design practice.

A monolithic office tower set to become an embassy and consulate on the banks of the Nile, its calm and sculptural silhouette stands in quiet contrast to the vibrant energy of contemporary Cairo.

Column-free corners open the interiors to panoramic views at every level, while an intelligent façade responds to the building’s different orientations, providing thermal protection against excessive solar heat gain. Drawing inspiration from the geometric patterns of traditional mousharrabiyye, the building’s outer skin reinterprets a familiar element of local architecture, bringing together climate responsiveness, contemporary expression, and cultural identity.

Nature, translated.

The architecture grows from a dialogue between what was already there and what is newly introduced. Here, the trunk of an existing pine stands directly against the perforated Corten skin, revealing an unexpected correspondence between tree and wall. The dense pattern of the steel echoes the texture of the bark, while its rusted surface recalls the colors of the soil, the stones and the surrounding landscape. Neither element attempts to dominate the other. The tree remains alive and organic; the Corten is precise and constructed. Together, they create a moment where nature and architecture seem to share the same language. Over time, weather, vegetation and material will continue to transform this relationship, allowing the house to become increasingly embedded in its landscape.

The House with Two Lives

Into the landscape, the house reveals itself slowly, between the trunks of century-old pines and the layers of a garden shaped by time. The architecture does not seek to dominate its surroundings, but to inhabit them quietly. Rust-colored Corten steel echoes the iron-rich soil and the warm tones of the forest, while climbing plants gradually soften its edges and weave the new intervention into the existing landscape. Beyond the trees, the distant mountains become part of the experience, framed through composed openings and moments of pause. Here, architecture and nature evolve together: stone, steel, trees and earth forming a continuity between past and present. The landscape becomes more than a setting; it becomes a layer of memory, renewal and peace

S&C House

Set within an 1,800 m² lot in the hills above Beirut, this house is shaped by its surroundings and the needs of its family of five. Introverted by design, the 16 × 16 meter monolith creates a world within, while responding to the climate and character of its setting. Rather than clearing the site, the house is placed between pine trees, allowing the landscape to become an integral part of the architecture. Simple in form, precise in placement, and grounded in its context, the house becomes part of the landscape rather than an object within it.
