미국 뉴욕의 한식 파인 다이닝 레스토랑 ‘나로(Naro)’는 한식문화를 드러낼수 있는 공간을 한지로 조성했습니다.
공간을 설계한 ’스튜디오 라이터스‘의 김영래 대표는 자연스러운 조직감과 빛이 어우러질 때 만들어지는 따뜻하고 편안한 감성이야말로 한지만의 고유한 매력이라고 말합니다.

리셉션에는 겸재 정선의 「통천문암도」에서 영감을 받은 파도 패턴을 한지에 프린트해 적용했으며,
장응복 디자이너와 협업한 지장에는 책가도를 현대적으로 재해석한 한지 패턴을 담았습니다.
또한 천장에는 조선시대 천문도인 「천상열차분야지도」를 모티프로 한 작품이 설치되어 24절기와 음식문화를 상징적으로 표현하고 있습니다.

우리 종이 한지는 오랜 시간 이어져 온 전통의 가치를 바탕으로 현대의 공간과 문화 속에서 새로운 쓰임과 가치를 만들어가고 있습니다.

This week, we introduce Naro, a Korean fine dining restaurant in New York City, where hanji has been incorporated to create a space that reflects Korean culinary culture.
Kim Young-rae of Studio Writers describes the unique appeal of hanji as the warm and comforting atmosphere created through the interaction of its natural texture and light.

In the reception area, wave patterns inspired by Jeong Seon‘s Tongcheonmunamdo are printed on hanji and integrated into the interior design. A jichang (paper cabinet), created in collaboration with designer Chang Eungbok, features hanji patterns inspired by Chaekgado, traditional Korean paintings of books and bookshelves, reinterpreted in a contemporary way.
On the ceiling, a work inspired by Cheonsang Yeolcha Bunyajido, a celebrated astronomical chart from the Joseon Dynasty, symbolically references Korea’s 24 seasonal divisions and culinary traditions.

Hanji brings the values of a long-standing tradition into contemporary spaces and culture, where it continues to take on new forms and meanings.

〈교차 : 한지의 구조〉 전시 공방 소개: 안동한지
오늘은 국내 최대 수록지 생산지이자 국가의 소중한 기록을 책임지는 ‘안동한지’를 소개합니다.

해인사 팔만대장경 영인본 제작 등 고문서 보존의 중심 역할을 해왔으며, 특히 조선시대 훈·포장지 재현 업체로 선정되어 현재 우리나라의 공식 훈장증을 공급하며 독보적인 기술력을 인정받고 있습니다.
안동한지는 기술 계승에 머무르지 않고 공장 견학 및 만들기 체험 등 대중이 전통 종이의 제작 과정을 직접 경험할 수 있는 장을 마련하며 그 가치를 널리 알리고 있습니다. 국보 제196호 ‘신라백지묵서대방광불화엄경’을 전통 방식 그대로 재현해냈으며, 통일신라 시대부터 이어져 온 우리 종이의 우수한 보존성을 오늘날에 증명해내고 있습니다.

이번 전시에서 선보이는 ‘외발지’는 유물의 원형을 유지하는 보수용으로 특화된 종이입니다. 백닥과 잿물을 주원료 및 증해방법으로 하여, 합지하지 않은 1겹의 외발뜨기(흘림뜨기) 방식으로 제작되었습니다. 천 년의 시간을 견디는 안동한지의 정교한 결을 한지가헌에서 확인해 보시기 바랍니다.

〈INTERSECTIONS: The Structure of Hanji〉 - Andong Hanji

Today, we introduce Andong Hanji, Korea’s largest producer of handmade paper and a guardian of the nation’s precious records.

The workshop has long been at the center of preserving ancient documents, including the production of replicas for the Tripitaka Koreana at Haeinsa Temple. Notably, it was selected to recreate the paper used for royal honors and medals from the Joseon Dynasty and currently supplies the paper for South Korea’s official certificates of merit, a testament to its unrivaled technical expertise.

Beyond preserving tradition, Andong Hanji actively promotes the value of our heritage by offering factory tours and hands-on workshops where the public can experience the papermaking process firsthand. Its expertise shines in the reproduction of national treasures, such as National Treasure No. 196 (Silla Baekji Mukseo Daebang-gwang-bul Hwaeomgyeong), proving that the superior durability of Korean paper passed down since the Unified Silla period remains unchanged today.

The ’Oebal-ji‘ featured in this exhibition is a specialized paper for restoration, designed to maintain the original form of artifacts. It is crafted using Baekdak (white mulberry bark) as the primary raw material and processed through natural lye steaming. Its exceptional quality is why it is preferred by professional institutes, such as the Research Institute of Paper Cultural Heritage, for meticulous restoration work. 〈교차 : 한지의 구조〉 전시 공방 소개: 대승한지마을
오늘은 400년 한지 역사의 숨결이 고스란히 살아있는 완주의 자부심, ‘대승한지마을’을 소개합니다.

고려지의 원산지인 완주는 과거 고려시대부터 세계적으로 명성 높은 한지 생산지였습니다. 그중에서도 대승마을은 앞산의 승래봉(문필봉)과 뒷산의 두리봉이 감싸 안은 안정된 지형 덕분에 수려한 산수와 맑은 물을 보존하며 400년 전부터 전통 한지를 빚어왔습니다.
2010년 고려지의 전통을 계승하기 위해 한옥 스테이와 제조 체험 공간을 갖춘 지금의 대승한지마을이 조성되어 전통과 현대를 이어가고 있습니다.

최근 대승한지마을의 창호지가 덕수궁 준명당 실내 창호로 채택될 만큼, 이곳의 기술력은 국가 유산의 가치를 지키는 장인과 초지공들의 손길을 통해 그 우수성을 인정받고 있습니다.

이번 전시의 ‘복본용지’는 국산 백닥과 전통 잿물을 사용한 외발뜨기 방식으로 제작됩니다.유물 재현과 보존에 최적화된 대승한지마을의 숙련된 기술을 한지가헌에서 만나보시기 바랍니다.

〈INTERSECTIONS: The Structure of Hanji〉 - Daeseung Hanji Village

Wanju, the birthplace of Goryeoji (Goryeo paper), has been world-renowned for its paper production since the Goryeo Dynasty.

Nestled between the scenic peaks of Seungraebong and Duribong, Daeseung Village has preserved its pristine waters and natural landscape, crafting traditional Hanji for over four centuries. In 2010, the village was revitalized with Hanok stays and manufacturing spaces to inherit the legacy of Goryeoji, seamlessly bridging tradition and modernity.

The village’s exceptional craftsmanship was recently highlighted when its Changhoji (window paper) was selected for the interior of Junmyeongdang Hall in Deoksugung Palace. This superior quality is the result of the dedicated artistry of Master Kim Han-seop and skilled papermakers who continue to protect the value of Korea’s national heritage.

The ‘Bokbon-yongji’ featured in this exhibition showcases a robust structure that reflects the village‘s deep history. Made with domestic white mulberry (baekdak), traditional lye, and the oebal-tteugi (single-tool dipping) method, it is finished as eumyangji a double-layered sheet formed by joining two wet layers together.

전주 팔복동에서 ‘느슨하지만 단단한 연대’의 힘으로 전통을 이어가는 김인수·정정순 부부의 ‘용인한지’를 소개합니다.

두 사람은 전주 흑석골에서 나고 자라 한지 공장에서 함께 일하며 부부의 연을 맺은 뒤, 1998년부터 지금의 용인한지를 운영해오고 있습니다. 김인수 대표는 1970년대부터 쌓아온 초지 기술을 바탕으로, 얇은 종이도 고르게 떠내는 정교한 작업으로 잘 알려져 있습니다.
또한 인사동 지업사 ‘송지방’과 오랜 시간 품질로 신뢰를 쌓아온 작업장이기도 합니다.

한지의 쓰임에 따라 예천에서 계약재배로 공수해온 국산닥과 직접 재배한 황촉규를 사용하는 등 엄격한 품질을 관리하는 고집은 한지에 자연스레 녹아들어 있습니다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 ‘복본용지’는 두 장의 한지를 젖은 상태에서 결합한 합지로, 평량 58g/㎡의 두께감과 함께 피닥의 자연스러운 색과 고른 결이 특징입니다.

조선왕조실록 복본화 사업 등 주요 국가 프로젝트에 참여해온 용인한지의 복본용지는 한지가헌에서 만나보실 수 있습니다.

We introduce Yongin Hanji, run by Kim In-su and Jeong Jeong-sun, a husband-and-wife team continuing the tradition of hanji in Jeonju’s Palbok-dong.

Born and raised in Heukseokgol, Jeonju, they met while working at a hanji workshop and have operated Yongin Hanji since 1998. Kim In-su is known for his refined papermaking technique, producing even the thinnest sheets with a smooth, even surface. They have built a long-standing relationship with the Insadong paper shop “Songjibang,” based solely on trust in quality over decades.

Committed to strict material standards, they use domestically sourced mulberry bark from Yecheon and cultivate their own hibiscus manihot.The “Restoration Paper” featured in this exhibition is a type of eumyangji, made by combining two wet sheets into one. With a basis weight of 58g/㎡, it is thick yet soft, preserving the natural color and even texture of the fibers.

Yongin Hanji has contributed to major projects such as the reproduction of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Their work can be seen in this exhibition at Hanji Gaheon.

전시 공방 소개 : 원주 한지
오늘은 강원 무형유산 장응렬 한지장의 ‘원주한지’를 소개합니다.

‘한지’라는 명칭은 개화기 이후 양지와 우리 종이를 구분하기 위해 사용되기 시작했으며, 그 이전에는 신라의 ‘계림지’, 고려의 ‘고려지’로 불리며 세계 최고 수준의 품질을 인정받아 왔습니다. 장응렬 한지장은 이러한 고려지의 가치를 오늘에 되살리는 작업을 이어가고 있습니다.

황해도 출신 조부와 부친에 이어 1975년부터 3대째 가업을 잇고 있는 그는 한지를 삶처럼 다뤄왔습니다. 천연 색한지를 연구하며 한 가지 색을 얻기 위해 수천 장의 종이를 거듭 만들고 버리는 과정을 거쳐, 현재 230여 종의 색한지를 완성했습니다. 이번 전시에서 선보이는 ‘붉은 전통고려지’는 인공 색을 더하지 않은 종이로, 국산 피닥과 전통 잿물 증해, 미표백 공정을 통해 제작되었습니다. 평량 30g/㎡의 얇은 외발뜨기 한 겹으로 만들어져, 복본용지로서도 뛰어난 물성을 지닙니다.

한지를 누구나 경험할 수 있는 공간을 만드는 것을 꿈꾸는 장응렬 한지장. 그 진심이 담긴 원주한지의 고려지를 한지가헌에서 만나보시기 바랍니다.

Today, we introduce Wonju Hanji by Jang Eung-ryeol, a holder of Gangwon Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The term hanji came into use after the modern era to distinguish traditional Korean paper from Western paper. Before that, it was known as Gyerimji in the Silla period and Goryeoji in the Goryeo dynasty, widely recognized for its exceptional quality. Jang Eung-ryeol continues the work of restoring the historical value of Goryeo paper in the present day.

Following his grandfather and father from Hwanghae Province, he has carried on the family craft since 1975. For him, hanji is more than a profession—it is a way of life. Through years of research into naturally dyed hanji, he has developed over 230 colors, often producing and discarding thousands of sheets to achieve a single desired hue.

The Red Traditional Goryeo Paper presented in this exhibition is made without artificial coloring. Crafted using domestically sourced paper mulberry, traditional lye steaming, and an unbleached process, it is formed as a single thin sheet (30g/㎡) using the oebal-tteugi technique. Its refined yet durable quality makes it especially suitable as reproduction paper.

Jang Eung-ryeol aspires to create a space where anyone can experience hanji through exhibitions and education. We invite you to discover the depth and sincerity of Wonju Hanji at Hanjigaheon.

전시 공방 소개 : 덕치 전통한지

오늘은 임실 한지의 명맥을 지켜오며 4대째 가업을 이어온 김일수 지장의 ‘덕치전통한지’를 소개합니다.

덕치전통한지는 전북 무형유산 김일수 지장과 그의 아들 김장석 지장이 함께 운영하고 있습니다. 한때 100여 가구의 한지 농가가 있던 임실 덕치면에서, 김일수 지장은 60여 년간 전통 ‘외발뜨기’ 방식을 지켜오며 한지의 맥을 이어왔습니다. 직접 재배한 닥나무와 황촉규를 사용하고, 전통 잿물 증해와 미표백 과정을 거쳐 한지를 완성합니다. 수십 번의 손길 끝에 탄생한 종이는 ‘지천년 견오백(紙千年 絹五百)’의 말처럼 오랜 세월을 견디는 강인한 물성을 지니며, 인사동 화랑과 박물관 유물 보존 분야에서도 높은 평가를 받고 있습니다.

이번 전시에서는 젖은 종이 두 장을 맞붙여 만드는 ‘복본용지(합지)’를 소개합니다. 외발로 떠낸 두 겹이 하나로 결합된 이 구조는 일반 종이보다 더욱 치밀하고 질긴 특징을 지니며, 유물의 기록을 정교하게 재현하고 보존하는 데 적합합니다. 덕치전통한지의 복본용지를 한지가헌에서 직접 경험해 보시기 바랍니다.

Deokchi Traditional Hanji: The Sole Guardian of Imsil’s Legacy

In the ongoing exhibition 〈INTERSECTIONS: The Structure of Hanji〉 at Hanji House, we introduce Deokchi Traditional Hanji, the last remaining workshop in a once-flourishing papermaking village in Imsil.

Managed by Master Kim Il-su, a Gyeongsangbuk-do Intangible Cultural Heritage holder with 60 years of experience, and his son Kim Jang-seok, the workshop continues its 4th-generation legacy. Adhering to the traditional Oebal-tteugi technique using hand-grown mulberry and hibiscus mucilage, Master Kim produces paper that embodies the proverb “Hanji lasts a thousand years.”

The ‘Bokbon-yongji’ (Restoration Paper) featured in this exhibition is Eumyang-ji, crafted by joining two wet sheets. This layered structure creates a remarkably refined yet durable texture, essential for replicating and preserving cultural artifacts. Experience the resilience of Deokchi Hanji, trusted by museums and galleries for its superior quality, at Hanji House.

오늘은 전주 한지의 우수성을 세계에 알리고 보존·복원용지의 새로운 지평을 열어가는 ‘성일한지’를 소개합니다.

성일한지는 전주 흑석골의 전통을 일궈온 1대 최종수 장인에 이어, 전주시 지정 한지장인 최성일 장인이 2대째 가업을 이어가고 있습니다. 최성일 장인은 전통 방식을 엄격히 고수하며, 이탈리아 국립기록유산보존복원 중앙연구소(ICPAL)로부터 적합 인증을 획득해 전주 한지의 세계적인 품질을 입증했습니다.

특히 전주산 닥나무와 황촉규를 사용한 ‘외발뜨기’ 기법과, 젖은 종이 두 장을 합쳐 양면을 매끄럽게 만든 ‘음양지’는 성일한지의 정수를 보여줍니다. 1,000년 이상의 보존성과 일정한 두께, 강력한 내구성을 지닌 이 종이들은 현재 바티칸 교황청과 루브르 박물관 등 세계적 기관의 유물 복원에 핵심적인 역할을 하고 있습니다. 전주 한지의 자부심이 깃든 성일한지의 작업을 한지가헌에서 직접 경험해 보시기 바랍니다.

Among the featured workshops is Seongil Hanji, a leader in global conservation paper.

Led by Jeonju’s designated Hanji Master Choi Seong-il, the workshop continues a two-generation legacy. Its world-class quality was officially certified by Italy’s ICPAL, proving Jeonju Hanji‘s excellence in the field of cultural heritage restoration.

The hallmark of Seongil Hanji is its ”Oebal-tteugi“ (traditional scooping) technique and ”Eumyang-ji“ (double-layered paper). By fusing two sheets to create a smooth surface on both sides, they produce paper that lasts over 1,000 years. These exceptional papers are now used to restore priceless treasures at the Vatican and the Louvre.

Visit Hanji Gaheon to witness the craftsmanship and pride of Seongil Hanji firsthand.

4월 ’문화가 있는 날‘을 맞아 한지가헌에서 이미나 작가님과 함께 
 시간을 가졌습니다.

풍요와 품격을 상징하는 모란을 한 장의 종이로 빚어내는 과정은 생각보다 훨씬 더 섬세하고 아름다웠는데요. 정성껏 만들어진 꽃잎들이 모여 각자만의 개성이 담긴 예쁜 모란 꽃다발이 완성되었습니다.
한 송이씩 소중하게 들고 귀가하시는 뒷모습에서 봄의 생동감이 느껴지는 하루였습니다.🌸

To celebrate April‘s ’Culture Day‘, Hanjihouse hosted a special workshop with artist Lee Mina.

The process of breathing life into a single sheet of paper to create a peony a symbol of abundance and elegance was far more delicate and beautiful than imagined. As petals crafted with utmost care came together, everyone finished with their own unique and lovely peony bouquet.
Seeing everyone head home, carefully holding their blossoms, it felt as though the vibrant energy of spring was following in their footsteps. 🌸
