The fault code that stopped a KONE 3000 may NOT be the fault that started the problem.

That changes the way the fault history should be read.

Imagine seeing:

0026
0101
0051

Which one should you troubleshoot first?

The obvious answer is not always the right one.

Some KONE 3000 codes describe the original abnormal condition.

Others may only appear because the elevator could no longer start, synchronize, close the door, or receive a ready signal afterwards.

That is why reading one code in isolation can lead technicians toward the wrong board, sensor, contactor—or even the drive itself.

So how should codes like 0021, 0026, 0101, 0044, 0083 and the 11xx–17xx communication faults actually be read?

And which fault in the history deserves attention first?

You see “FLS” on a Hitachi elevator drawing.

But what if the same code can mean two completely different things?

That is exactly where Hitachi component codes can become confusing.

DS, GS, FML, MPU, INV, H48A...

These short codes appear everywhere in older Hitachi drawings, control cabinets and maintenance documents.

They can help you identify what a device does.

But there is one important catch:

A component code is NOT always a spare-part number.

And in some cases, even a small suffix can completely change the meaning.

For example:

FLS and FLS(D) are not the same thing.

FIO, H48A and IOCB may all describe I/O-related boards—but they do not automatically identify the same replacement part.

So how do you read these codes correctly?

The OTIS elevator has power.

The floor display is working.

The doors are closed.

But it still refuses every call.

So what is actually stopping it?

This is where looking at one fault code—or one LED—can send troubleshooting in the wrong direction.

On an OTIS system, the useful answer may be hidden across three different places:

• The controller’s operating mode
• The input and output states
• The controller and drive event history

And there is another trap:

“Fault 205” may not even be enough information.

The controller family, drive model, software version, leading zeros and the FULL event message can completely change what that number means.

So when an OTIS elevator refuses to run, what should technicians check first?

An OTIS 3200 looked like it had an electrical or door-system fault.

The actual problem was a worn guide shoe.

That is exactly why elevator fault codes can be misleading when they are treated as a parts list.

We reviewed 17 reported OTIS 3100 and 3200 fault cases.

In several of them, the visible symptom was nowhere near the reported root cause.

A normal floor display did not mean the call circuit was healthy.

A DBD error did not automatically mean the control board had failed.

A reset restored one elevator—but did not explain why it stopped.

And in one case, a problem that appeared electrical was actually caused by mechanical movement.

So when an OTIS 3100 or 3200 stops, what should technicians trust first:

The fault code?

The board?

The wiring?

The live inputs?

Or the physical condition of the elevator?

Your elevator may already know why it failed.

The technician standing in front of it may not be able to see the answer.

That is becoming a very real problem as elevators collect more fault history, operating data, door events, drive events and remote-monitoring information.

Imagine this:

10:41 — something abnormal happens.

10:42 — the elevator shuts down.

The technician arrives later and sees only the final fault code.

But somewhere in the controller, service tool or cloud platform, there may already be a much longer story.

So who actually gets to see it?

The manufacturer?

The building owner?

The maintenance company?

What happens when the building changes service providers?

And with connected-equipment data access becoming a bigger issue in Europe, could independent maintenance companies eventually get more useful diagnostic information?

There is an even bigger catch:

More data still does NOT automatically tell you which part is broken.

Then you find an MCB online.

Same code. Same part?

Not necessarily.

This is one of the easiest mistakes to make when reading OTIS elevator drawings and control cabinet labels.

Codes such as:

LRU
PVT
DBSS
RCB
ACD
TCI

can quickly tell a technician what kind of device or function is involved.

But there is one important catch:

An OTIS component code is not always the actual replacement part number.

The same functional code may appear across different elevator generations, controller systems or project configurations.

So what do codes like LRU, PVT, MCB, DBR, GSS or EPO actually mean?

Nothing is wrong with the escalator.
So why is AI already warning the passengers?
On August 26, Busan demonstrated an AI-based escalator safety system at Centum City Station on Metro Line 2.
The unusual part?
It is not mainly watching the machine.
It is watching people.
Walking or running on the escalator.
Moving in the wrong direction.
Leaning outward.
Handling wheeled luggage in risky ways.
When the system detects certain behaviours, it can trigger warning lights and voice guidance—before any traditional escalator safety device has necessarily detected a mechanical problem.
That creates a completely new safety question:
What if the escalator is working perfectly, but the passenger is creating the danger?
And an even harder one:
If AI believes an accident is about to happen, should it ever be allowed to stop the escalator itself?
Because an unnecessary emergency stop could create another danger for everyone already standing on it.
Busan is now evaluating the technology before deciding whether wider deployment makes sense.
What this trial could mean for the future of escalator safety is more interesting than the camera itself.

“1000 kg. 1.0 m/s. 10 floors. Please quote.”
It sounds like enough information for an elevator price.
It usually isn’t.
Two passenger elevators can have exactly the same capacity, speed and number of floors—and still require very different quotations.
Why?
Because some of the most important details are missing from those three numbers.
And this is where many projects go wrong:
A buyer asks five suppliers for prices.
Five quotations come back.
One is much cheaper.
But they may not actually be quoting the same elevator.
So before comparing prices, there is a better question to ask:
What information does an elevator supplier actually need to prepare a meaningful quotation?
And which missing detail can completely change the equipment configuration?

The new elevator control board arrives.
You install it.
The elevator still doesn’t move.
This can happen after a lightning strike or power surge—and it’s exactly why “the main board is burned” can be an expensive assumption.

A screen in an elevator doesn’t make it “smart.”
Neither does a smartphone app.
So what actually makes an elevator smart?
That question is becoming more important as manufacturers add connected systems, remote monitoring, predictive maintenance, energy management and digital passenger services.
But there’s a problem.
Some features sound impressive in a quotation but may have very little to do with the building’s real needs.
A developer may be paying for connectivity without knowing who owns the data.
A “predictive maintenance” system may detect an abnormal trend—but that doesn’t necessarily tell the technician which part is failing.
And a regenerative drive can save energy, but connectivity itself doesn’t make an elevator more efficient.
