URBAN VERTICAL PARK | A place to relax
The Urban Vertical Park is a mixed-use building located across from Phsar Kronat, a traditional market that primarily served locals’ daily needs in the past. The five-story building serves multiple purposes, combining a coffee shop, boutique, restaurant, and rooftop garden. It offers a place for everyone to rest and relax in the heart of Kampot.
Inspired by Kampot’s unique character, including the traditional Khmer salt-drying sheds in the salt fields, the Kampong Trach cave valley, and Prek Teuk Chhou. Our design aims to create natural convex and concave spaces where light enters the interior and animates the entrance, we conceived the architectural space as a walk beneath the Kampong Trach valley. Rounded columns with a terrazzo texture to resemble salt fields before harvest, while the shed interior is designed with vertical wooden stripes. The design aims to create a multisensory and immersive experience that draws on the surrounding Kampot environment, including its people, urban context, and local culture, to strengthen an emotional connection to the space.
We created a “Public Void” that seamlessly connects the front pedestrian area to the rear pathway, also known as Deung Hem Street. The doorless principle encourages horizontal circulation, while the wall-less principle enhances interior brightness and a sense of spaciousness.
