A Farmer Stuck in the Mud... Literally!
Came across this video,
A woman, Mother and Farmer, struggle through thick mud while planting Nduma (arrowroots).
At first, it looks funny. The mud is winning the battle. Boots were disappearing. Every step was a negotiation with the soil.
But then I thought...
This is the reality behind the food on our plates.
While many of us comfortably sit at the table with a fork in hand, farmers are out there battling mud, rain, pests, diseases, rising costs, poor roads, and unpredictable markets to keep our food system alive.
They till. They plant. They w**d. They harvest.
And then comes another struggle...
The broker arrives.
The same farmer who has spent months nurturing a crop is often forced to sell at a low price because they need cash, lack storage, or have limited market access.
Some farmers decide to bypass brokers and take their produce directly to the market.
But guess what happens next?
The consumer becomes the next negotiator.
"These Ndumas are too small."
"This one is dirty."
"This one is not perfectly shaped."
"Can you reduce the price?"
Meanwhile, the farmer is simply trying to recover the cost of producing food under incredibly difficult conditions.
The truth is that food doesn't start on supermarket shelves.
It starts in the mud.
It starts with sore backs, muddy boots, long days, and resilient farmers who refuse to give up.
So next time you buy fresh produce, remember:
_ You're not just buying Nduma.
_ You're not just buying vegetables.
_ You're investing in a farmer's livelihood.
_You're supporting the people who feed the nation.
Let's build a food system where farmers are valued as much as the food they produce.
Because sustainable agriculture begins with sustainable incomes for farmers.
Today... The farmer is stuck in the mud,
but tomorrow, everyone else wants to take the profit.
Maybe it's time we helped farmers get unstuck too.
