Last week I visited this part of our country, and I came in to terms with the challenges that men and women from this region face on a daily basis. I listened keenly to Pastor David Tum and Pastor Maritim both from the Kipsigis community as they narrated to me the trouble they go through trying to light their house at night. The communities in this region have no access to the national grid and the modern METHODS OF LIGHTING remains a luxury that is far from their reach. Every evening, one of the family members has to hold a dry back (cover) of the Mutarakwa/ Cinder/(Juniperus procera) tree, put it in fire until it develops a huge fire flame, then hold it up for the rest of the family members to enjoy light that emanates from the flame. This process is repeated until they have completed all their evening tasks. Sadly, Pupils have to complete their homework under the same circumstances. This kind of lighting is not only cumbersome, but also risky and unhealthy. When we introduced the solar energy as an alternative source of lighting, the joy on the faces of this community was quite evident. In pastor Maritims words; our visit and introduction of solar energy in this region was just God sent. They can now have decent lighting, charge their phones and listen to radio and music from the comfort of their houses. It’s a real transformation, one household at a time.
