AI & ARCHITECTURE
Currently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a significant role in the architectural design process, particularly in creating conceptual visualizations, simulating atmospheres, forms, materials, and architectural elements. This enables designers and project owners to communicate their vision and design approaches quickly and efficiently. However, the ability to create architectural visualizations does not mean that AI can construct technically perfect and buildable architecture without architectural supervision.
Architectural work is not merely composed of form and aesthetics as presented in a visual representation; it is an integrated process between the context of the location, the environment, user behavior, architectural concepts, structure, materials, building systems, laws, budget, construction methods, and actual project limitations. Therefore, while "architectural visualization" and "architectural work" share a similar direction, they possess significantly different contexts and levels of development. AI-generated visualizations should be viewed as a tool for communicating and exploring design possibilities, rather than as a construction drawing or the final answer to the architectural project.
In a philosophical dimension, the value of architecture does not depend solely on the beauty of its form, but rather on the process of creating relationships between the architect, project owner, location, environment, materials, and user experience, resulting in a unique concept and identity for the project. Architects, therefore, do not merely create forms, but interpret, synthesize, and transform needs and imagination into meaningful, functional spaces. And responding to the context of the place.
Therefore, AI should be used as a “tool” to foster creativity and enhance the design process, not to replace the architectural thinking process and professional responsibilities of architects. Architecture in the AI era is not about who can create more beautiful images, but rather about how we can use technology to transform imagination into architecture that is meaningful, valuable to humanity, and can truly exist within the context of the physical world.
