We are honored to be recognized as a Winner in the BloombergNEF 2026 Pioneers competition, spotlighting startups accelerating the global energy transition through technological innovation.

While this year, BloombergNEF chose winners addressing three key challenges; technologies for sustainable, scalable data center infrastructure, flattening the duck curve, and decarbonizing shipping and heavy-duty transport , BasiGo was selected in the Wildcard category, recognizing innovations that defy convention and push boundaries. That is exactly what we are doing: proving that Africa can lead the world in affordable, low-carbon public transport.

This recognition belongs to our entire team, investors, partners, and communities who believe that clean transport is not just possible, it is essential.

𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐆𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐕𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚

BasiGo has commenced local assembly of its electric vans in Kenya - the Ma3e model, delivering the country's first locally assembled electric vans. In partnership with Associated Vehicle Assemblers (AVA), a leading Kenyan contract manufacturer based in Mombasa, the vans are being built from Complete Knocked Down (CKD) kits, with the first 22 locally built units set for delivery to customers in April and May.

Designed for high-utilisation operations, the Ma3e has a range of up to 300 km (NEDC) and supports a broad set of use cases - including public transport service, school shuttles, corporate staff transport, airport transfers, and hotel shuttle services.

Over the past 10 months, BasiGo has been operating two electric vans on intercity routes, including Nyahururu-Nyeri-Nakuru and Nairobi-Thika. Their strong performance has validated both the product and the operating model, driving a reservation pipeline of over 500 units. Local assembly is now the critical next step to unlock scale of the Ma3e.

Looking ahead, BasiGo plans to deploy thousands of electric vans across Kenya, accelerating the country’s climate commitments and positioning Kenya as a blueprint for clean, inclusive transport solutions.

We have just reached an important milestone, not just for BasiGo, but for electric mobility in Africa.

Our electric bus project has achieved Gold Standard Certified project status, making it the first verified electric bus carbon project in Africa! We are proud to announce that we are contracting the sale of our first cohort of Gold Standard VERs (Verified Emission Reductions) to Climate Impact Partners , who work with clients committed to climate action and low-carbon transport solutions.

The global carbon market has undergone significant scrutiny over the past few years, yet the carbon market remains a critical tool in helping emerging markets accelerate their energy transition. With over 90% of Kenya's electricity coming from renewable sources, bus electrification in Kenya has greater impact on CO2 emissions than almost anywhere else in the world. Our electric bus project generates emissions reductions that are transparent, traceable, and verifiable by design, backed by on-board telematics that record every kilometer and kilowatt-hour in real time, making our reductions inherently high quality. Beyond CO2 emissions reduction, our electric bus project reduces air pollution, advances energy security, and helps keep transport costs affordable for the public in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

We thank Gold Standard for recognizing the impact of our project, and we thank Climate Impact Partners for being the first to contract VERs from a bus electrification project in Africa!

As we continue on the , our emissions impact will only continue to grow. We are proud to have set the pace, not just for BasiGo, but for bus electrification projects across the continent.

Join us in welcoming Meshack Nyaribo and Benson Bogonko to the BasiGo team!

Meshack joins us as 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲, bringing over a decade of experience in corporate finance, strategy, and operational leadership. He will lead our service operations, providing strategic performance oversight, working closely with operators to ensure reliable and efficient fleet operations.

Joining him is Benson, our new 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗿, with over 12 years of experience in mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Benson will oversee preventive and corrective maintenance of our fleet, while strengthening coordination between service and fleet operations.

Together, Meshack and Benson will play a critical role in strengthening BasiGo’s service capability, ensuring our fleet operates reliably and efficiently as we scale across the country.

Our Chief Product Officer, Doreen Orishaba, recently took the stage at the TED Countdown Summit 2025 in Nairobi, and her talk is officially LIVE!

Doreen shares the real-world journey of scaling clean transport in Africa. From overcoming early skepticism about electric mobility to now moving thousands of passengers daily on zero-emission buses across Kenya and Rwanda, the impact is undeniable.

While addressing the climate crisis is critical, the business case is just as compelling: electric public transport is proving to be cheaper to run, more reliable to operate, and less vulnerable to fuel price volatility. This is a massive economic and operational win for African cities today.

Africa has the potential to lead the global electric mobility movement, and BasiGo has proved that the transition to electric is possible even without subsidies.

We are proud to announce the promotion of Doreen Orishaba to the position of Chief Product Officer at BasiGo!

Doreen has been with BasiGo since January 2022, leading the product launch of our very first electric buses in Kenya. Doreen then took on the challenge of launching BasiGo’s first new market, serving as the first Managing Director of BasiGo Rwanda. Under Doreen’s leadership, BasiGo introduced the very first electric buses into passenger operations in Rwanda in December 2023. Since then, BasiGo Rwanda has expanded to a fleet of 34 buses serving both city routes and inter-city routes all over the country.

Over the past 10 years, Doreen has proven to be one of the preeminent leaders in Africa’s EV Industry. As Chief Product Officer, Doreen will now lead Engineering, Product and Technology Development, as well as New Market Development. She will guide BasiGo’s expanding vision for electric vehicles and energy storage technology across Africa.

We are proud to welcome Doreen as the first female C-Level Executive for an Electric Bus company in Africa. We know her vision for electric mobility in Africa, a vision and commitment that began over 10 years ago, will ensure BasiGo’s mission accelerates and the quality of our service to customers remains unmatched!

School of the Nations has become the first school in Kenya to acquire an electric school bus, setting a new benchmark for sustainable student transport. The 25-seater BYD electric bus, imported by BasiGo in 2023, has proven its durability over three years in Nairobi's public transport system. Now refurbished to near-new condition, it is the first of 11 electric vehicles that will transition the school's entire fleet to electric by 2026.

To bring more affordable electric bus options to the market, BasiGo is now refurbishing public transport electric buses into near-new condition that meet regulatory and safety requirements, and offering them at a significantly lower cost to entities that are unable to afford brand new electric buses.

BasiGo will install dedicated charging infrastructure at the school, provide discounted charging access at depots, and deliver end-to-end service and maintenance to guarantee optimal performance.

At BasiGo, we believe opportunity begins with access; access to inspiration, real-world experience, and a clear vision of what the future can hold.
We recently hosted Ashley Momanyi Kerubo, one of Kenya’s top 2025 KCSE students, who aspires to pursue a career in mechatronics engineering. Over two days, Ashley immersed herself in our operations , engaging with our engineers and leadership team, and experiencing electric bus assembly, telematics, and charging infrastructure firsthand.
Before this visit, Ashley had met only one mechatronics engineer, yet her ambition was unwavering. What she lacked was not drive, but exposure.
As we continue opening our doors to young women like Ashley, we hope to help bridge the gap between aspiration and access , empowering more young women to see themselves shaping the future of science and technology.

Njoki Waititu steps up from Operations Manager to Head of Fleet Management. Njoki will lead the scaling and performance of our fleet operations, ensuring reliability, efficiency, and uptime across our growing electric bus network.

Patrick Makori steps up from Quality Lead to Head of Quality. Patrick will embed quality management across our operations, from manufacturing and service to charging infrastructure, ensuring we deliver on our commitments as we scale.

Jackline Kimani steps up from Vehicle Assembly Specialist to Production Manager. Jackline will run our manufacturing operations, ensuring we meet the growing demand for BasiGo e-buses with the precision and pace our customers expect.

These promotions reflect the exceptional work Njoki, Patrick, and Jackline have done and the strength of our team as we scale. Building deep operational expertise from within positions us to execute at the level our mission demands as we work toward our goal of 1,000 electric buses on the road.
