Putting Design into Words
The studio course I have taught at the Faculty of Architecture, Tohoku Institute of Technology, has reached its final review.
A design review, or jury, is a time for students to articulate their ideas in front of drawings and models, and to reconsider their designs through questions and dialogue.
I believe it is not a place to determine which projects are better or worse, but a forum for sharing the thinking behind each design and exploring new possibilities through conversation.
Since last year, we have also held joint reviews with the Department of Architectural Environment at Tohoku Bunka Gakuen University.
By encountering work produced in different learning environments, students gain an opportunity to consider architecture from multiple perspectives.
It has now been five full years since I began teaching as an adjunct lecturer at Tohoku Institute of Technology, and this review marks the end of a chapter.
It has also been a valuable time of learning for me, shaped by the students’ ideas, attitudes, and approaches to design.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all the faculty members and students who have been part of this journey.
I hope to continue nurturing opportunities to discuss architecture across universities, disciplines, and professional roles.
