In 1915, a fruit packing cannery opened along Santa Rosa Creek. Today, after nearly two decades of environmental cleanup, the site is home to 129 affordable homes for families, formerly homeless veterans, and young professionals.

The Stewart Cannery at Railroad Square keeps its history in plain view. The original brick walls, loading docks, and steel canopy are now part of the community, and a new promenade links the neighborhood to the Santa Rosa Creek Trail.

Miyamoto International provided structural engineering, including the bracing and shoring that kept the historic brick walls standing through construction, the restoration of a historic water tower, and foundations designed to work alongside existing bridge foundations.

The project is up for People's Choice in the AIA Redwood Empire Design Awards. Vote by October 12: miy.to/stewart-cannery

The earthquake destroyed the location where La Patatería operated in Manizales.

In the aftermath, Gildardo and his team decided not to stand by. They began distributing meals and food supplies to people who needed them, while also dealing with the consequences the earthquake had left on their own business.

Because the restaurant’s original location must be demolished, they also faced the challenge of finding a new space that would allow La Patatería to continue operating without moving to another part of Manizales.

And then, an unexpected story of solidarity emerged.
A neighbor decided to leave her own home, where she had been living, and rent it to Gildardo so he could transform it into the new location for La Patatería.

A home became a restaurant, and a business that seemed to have lost everything found a new place to begin again.

For many people, after the pain and uncertainty, disasters can also bring new opportunities. These are stories of people who, even after losing so much, find a way to rise and move forward stronger than before.

On day two of debris removal, the progress was remarkable.

"Yesterday I was here, and today it looks completely different," said Dr. Kit Miyamoto. "The contractors are moving quickly because people live here. These dangerous elements need to come down."

This is where reconstruction truly begins: clearing hazardous debris so residents can live safely in their neighborhoods.

Several types of equipment work together on site. Crushers break large chunks of debris into smaller pieces. Excavators scoop the material and load it into trucks. Jackhammers bring down damaged structures quickly.

Local contractors bring the machinery and the experience to move and process large volumes of debris at the same time, making them best suited to lead this work.

What happens to families after an earthquake?

In the affected areas of Colombia’s Eje Cafetero region, many families are trying to return to their homes and gradually rebuild their daily lives. But first, they need to know what can be recovered, what requires intervention, and which structures may need to be demolished.

As part of the international earthquake response, Miyamoto International is supporting this process through technical assessments that help determine the condition of buildings and provide information to guide recovery decisions.

Behind every structure assessed is a family, a story, and a home waiting to feel safe again.

We continue working in the field to help communities move toward an informed and resilient recovery.
