The Falmouth Public General Hospital is set to benefit from a major fundraising initiative as the Sandals Foundation launches the Island Challenge Jamaica 2026, targeting £100,000 to strengthen the hospital’s neonatal and paediatric services.

The four-day endurance challenge will take place October 2–5, 2026, with more than 30 athletes from the United Kingdom, along with local and international partners, converging in Ocho Rios for a series of land and sea endurance activities.

Proceeds from the challenge will support the acquisition of critical equipment and resources to strengthen care for newborns, infants and children at Falmouth Hospital.

The initiative is particularly significant as the hospital continues efforts to strengthen its paediatric and neonatal capacity following the impact of Hurricane Melissa, which resulted in the loss of essential equipment and affected services.

The Jamaica edition of the Island Challenge represents a significant partnership between the Sandals Foundation, Sandals Resorts, tourism partners, athletes and other stakeholders, demonstrating the tourism industry’s role in supporting critical community needs.

The JHTA Montego Bay Chapter has commended the organizers of Dream Weekend 2026 for successfully relocating the festival to Montego Bay, where it delivered significant economic benefits from July 30 to August 3, 2026.

Despite reduced room stock following Hurricane Melissa, the five-day entertainment event generated strong business for hotels, short-term rentals, restaurants, transportation providers, craft vendors, attractions and other small businesses, highlighting the growing value of entertainment tourism to the destination.

JHTA Montego Bay Chapter Chair, Kerry Ann Quallo Casserly, said, "Dream Weekend 2026 showcased Montego Bay's resilience and reinforced the power of entertainment tourism to drive economic activity across our city. We commend the organizers for delivering a safe, well-executed event that created meaningful opportunities for businesses large and small while further strengthening Montego Bay's position as a premier tourism and entertainment destination."

The award was presented during the Annual Flag Raising and Civic Ceremony held at Sam Sharpe Square on August 6, 2026, commemorating Jamaica's 64th Anniversary of Independence under the national theme, "United in Celebrating Resilience."

As Jamaica's tourism industry continues to expand, the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has launched its Human Capital and Workforce Development Committee, a strategic initiative aimed at developing a skilled, future-ready workforce to support the sector's long-term growth.

Announced by JHTA President O'Brian Heron, the Committee will be co-chaired by Dr. Omar Robinson and Clifton Reader and will focus on strengthening partnerships with educational institutions, addressing workforce needs, promoting training and certification, and creating stronger career pathways into tourism.

"Our people remain the foundation of Jamaica's tourism success," said Heron. "This initiative is about investing in talent, creating opportunities and ensuring our workforce is equipped to meet the evolving needs of the industry."

Royalton Hotels & Resorts is set to reopen five of its Jamaica resorts this summer, signalling continued confidence in the island's thriving tourism industry.

Three Negril properties will reopen on August 25, followed by two Montego Bay resorts on September 15, welcoming guests with refreshed accommodations, upgraded facilities and enhanced all-inclusive experiences.

The phased reopening represents more than the return of hotel operations. It reflects the continued confidence of global hospitality brands in Jamaica's tourism sector and the destination's long-term growth potential.

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has reaffirmed its commitment to working in close partnership with the Government to strengthen Jamaica's tourism industry, following an inaugural strategic meeting between the Association's newly elected executive, tourism stakeholders and the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett.

Led by President O'Brian Heron, the JHTA outlined its continued focus on representing the interests of its membership while supporting initiatives that enhance the country's tourism product, strengthen disaster preparedness and improve the industry's long-term competitiveness.

The meeting reaffirmed the JHTA's vital role as the voice of Jamaica's tourism industry, with discussions centred on expanding public-private sector collaboration to advance the Tourism 3.0 agenda and support the sector's continued recovery following Hurricane Melissa.

Minister Bartlett underscored the Government's commitment to maintaining the JHTA as a key partner in shaping tourism policy, highlighting workforce development, professional certification, stronger local supply chains and greater community participation as priorities for sustainable growth.

More than 150 community-based tourism operators from across Jamaica benefited from the National Community-based Tourism Resilience Symposium, held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on July 16. The event brought together tourism stakeholders, government agencies and industry experts to strengthen the resilience and long-term sustainability of Jamaica's community tourism sector.

Participants engaged in interactive workshops, panel discussions and networking sessions focused on business continuity, disaster preparedness, climate resilience, digital marketing, access to financing, product development and sustainable tourism practices. The symposium also connected operators with support programmes and grant opportunities to help strengthen and grow their businesses.

The initiative reinforces Jamaica's commitment to building stronger, more resilient community tourism enterprises that preserve the island's rich cultural heritage, create economic opportunities and deliver authentic visitor experiences while preparing operators to successfully navigate future challenges.
