A garden should belong to its landscape 🌸

The best Puglian gardens don’t feel as though they’ve been dropped onto the landscape.

They feel as though they’ve always been there.

Local stone.

Ancient trees.

Naturalistic planting.

Colours borrowed from the earth around them.

Spaces that frame rather than compete with the view.

For me, that’s the difference between simply designing a garden and designing a sense of place. 🦋

The beauty of gravel.

I ❤️ a gravel garden.

It feels so naturally at home in Puglia, limestone beneath your feet, ancient olive trees above you and planting allowed to spill and soften around the edges.

Gravel also has a practical beauty.

It allows rain to reach the soil, reduces the need for thirsty lawns and creates the perfect canvas for Mediterranean planting.

🌱A Puglian garden needs to be designed for August🌞

Not just for the moment when everything is freshly planted and beautifully watered.

It needs to cope with heat, drought, wind and long periods without rain.

That means choosing plants that belong here or plants that are genuinely suited to this climate.

The secret isn’t choosing plants that survive. It’s choosing plants that thrive 🌱

🌿 HELLO SEPTEMBER IN PUGLIA

The garden after the heat.

September arrives gently in Puglia.

After the long, intense heat of summer, the garden begins to breathe again.

The light softens.
The evenings become cooler.
The grasses catch the breeze.
Olive trees take centre stage.
And plants that have quietly endured the summer begin to show their beauty again.

For me, this is one of the most beautiful moments in a Mediterranean garden.

Not perfectly manicured.
Not fighting the climate.
But working with it.

A garden shaped by its place, its seasons and the rhythm of life in Puglia. ❤️

I like to experiment with design tools and provide as many visualizations as possible …I work by sketching over photos in Procreate and sometimes use AI to polish images to gain more clarity for my clients.

✍️ As the garden moves from concept to reality, the design can naturally drift and evolve to accommodate what we find on site and any changes that happen during the build. Plant placement, irrigation and spacing can all be fine-tuned as the garden takes shape. I’m always on hand to advise, helping make those small adjustments while keeping the overall vision and feel of the original design.

Here’s one we tweaked pre plant order, ready for Septembers planting, where I will be on site to help with plant placements 🌱🌱🌱

🌿 August Garden Tip – Don’t Forget to Look Up

When we’re busy watering, weeding and deadheading, it’s easy to focus only on what’s happening at ground level.

But August is the perfect time to stop and look up.

The canopy of a tree does so much more than provide shade. It cools the air, protects plants beneath it, creates habitats for birds and pollinators, and frames beautiful views through the garden.

One well-placed tree can completely transform the way a garden feels—making it a place where people naturally want to slow down and spend time.

In my Puglian gardens, I love using trees like Albizia (Persian Silk Tree), false pepper trees, and carefully positioned trees to create light, movement and dappled shade without blocking the landscape.

Sometimes the most important plant in the garden isn’t the one with the brightest flowers—it’s the one above your head.
