At long last, the research project for an 𝘌𝘯𝘤𝘺𝘤𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘢𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘳𝘦𝘶𝘴𝘦 of 20th-century architecture has come to fruition in the form of a publication. From 2010 to 2015, Alessandra Castelbarco Albani and Marco Di Nallo contributed as research assistants and editorial collaborators to this project at the Mendrisio Academy of Architecture, under the direction of Roberta Grignolo and Bruno Reichlin.
The built heritage of the 20th century concerns society in general. Most of the buildings where we live, work, pass on our way to work, and spend our leisure time were built during the last century. 20th-century architecture, including housing complexes, office blocks, industrial buildings, railway stations, cinemas, theatres, public baths, and hotels, forms the background of everyday life and the stage of our shared “past experience”. These buildings should not be considered merely for their aesthetic features. They also relate to physical well-being, social rituals, representations, and associated concepts such as values and emotions.
