As I’m spending some extended time in England I decided to photograph these three portraits in their frames which were all made in Florence by Filippo Franceschi

The Franceschi family have been providing hand made frames for Charles and his students for as long as the Studios at Borgo San Frediano have existed. Situated opposite our front door, on via San Giovanni, the relationship of the two artisanal operations is an example of how artistically collaborative living and working south side of the river in Florence can still be.

The thing about John Martyn is that he’s totally flawed, an absolute addict, the worst type of person you could hope to love but because of all that the pain and love that he pours into his music becomes the most real expression of a wandering soul you could hope to hear. His only equivalent would be Townes at his best. I lie in bed and wish they were alive but then I remind myself they would be so disappointed in this damned and hollow world. Long live Andrea, smash the status quo.

The 1st year students start their first portrait paintings this week so it fell to me to give a 2 hour demo of our technique and it fell to long suffering 2nd year student and all round inspirational guy to sit for it.

Congratulations to the exhibitors of this year’s annual Charles H. Cecil Studios Summer Show at Il Palmerino - Un Volto e i suoi Sguardi V.

Here are some pics - mainly taken by - from the opening event this weekend. Thanks to all who attended - thanks to the the writers who came to interpret the work at our writers event the following day - grazie mille to Federica and all her team for inviting us back up to paradise for another year - and thanks to Charles, it’s great to see you back up at chez Vernon Lee!

A landscape painting day will be held this weekend. The show will be on and open to the public until Saturday 6th of June when we will most likely have another little party. See you there.
