Giovanni Traverso (Bolzano 1969) and Paola Vighy (Vicenza 1969) graduated in architecture from the IUAV in Venice and completed their studies with MsC in Light&Lighting at the Bartlett, University College London. In 1996 they founded the traverso-vighy studio in Vicenza, where they develop light-weight buildings and experimental projects related to the use of light. The studio's projects follow a

consistent path leading to the design of lightweight buildings, based on experimentation, prefabrication and economy of resources. Working with the local craft production they try to establish a balance between traditional knowledge and technological optimization. In recent years the focus for the environment has turned into a real effort to use sustainable technologies. In the field of lighting design traverso-vighy keeps a careful look at the sustainability thematic: their professional assignments ranges from urban-scale interventions, to the design of lighting systems dedicated to historic buildings and works of art. It also promotes cultural activities to raise awareness of the value of natural light as a compositional element of the architecture. In the 2013 the project TVZEB - Traverso Vighy Zero Energy Building won the Illumni Infinity Award in the Daylighting category. They have been teaching at the main Italian Master courses of Lighting Design (IUAV, La Sapienza) and at the School of Architecture, University of Florida (UFL). Now directing at UFL, the “Daylight Thinking” international course about daylight and sustainable design.

A medieval monastery, a walled city, the remote countryside and the soul of Going Dark. Explore the stunning setting where it all unfolds.

Located on the famous Via Francigena, the pilgrimage route from Canterbury in England to Rome in Italy this is a magical place. Still popular with walkers, cyclists and pilgrims the tiny walled village of Abbadia a Isola becomes a living lab for two nights. All the lights are turned off to allow you to experiment, learn and innovate.

Next up in our speaker lineup for Going Dark: Emrah Baki Ulas & Vera Xia from the University of Sydney!

Emrah and Vera lead the Nocturnal Design Collective out of the University with the aim of exploring one simple question - how can we rethink the way light is used at night?

Over the last year and a half, together with a group of collaborators, they’ve been looking at real nighttime environments across urban, peri-urban, remote and natural landscapes. They have been asking what design can contribute to healthier, darker, more meaningful nights and how do you get investment (financial and emotional) from governments.

Are you interested in how we design outdoor lighting that genuinely respects the night sky, supports biodiversity and serves human needs? Join us at Going Dark 4.0 where Emrah and Vera will be diving into Approaches to lighting design for dark sky, nature and people, bridging academic research with real-world design practice.

We’re thrilled to welcome back Chiara Carrucci (the founder of Nocturna) as a guest speaker for the 4th edition of Going Dark in Tuscany!

If you’ve been following her brilliant Roadmap, Night Governance, Night Experience and other graphically stunning series on LinkedIn, you’ll know Chiara is at the forefront of rethinking how we approach the night. Through Nocturna, her work digs deep into nightscape planning, dark sky preservation, wildlife protection and the sensory, ecological and cultural impact of light after dark.

Chiara won’t just be sharing theory - she’ll be helping us frame how we observe, analyze, think about and design for darkness before we even touch a fixture.
