Giovanni Traverso (Bolzano 1969) and Paola Vighy (Vicenza 1969) graduated in architecture from the IUAV in Venice and completed their studies with MsC in Light&Lighting at the Bartlett, University College London. In 1996 they founded the traverso-vighy studio in Vicenza, where they develop light-weight buildings and experimental projects related to the use of light. The studio's projects follow a consistent path leading to the design of lightweight buildings, based on experimentation, prefabrication and economy of resources. Working with the local craft production they try to establish a balance between traditional knowledge and technological optimization. In recent years the focus for the environment has turned into a real effort to use sustainable technologies. In the field of lighting design traverso-vighy keeps a careful look at the sustainability thematic: their professional assignments ranges from urban-scale interventions, to the design of lighting systems dedicated to historic buildings and works of art. It also promotes cultural activities to raise awareness of the value of natural light as a compositional element of the architecture. In the 2013 the project TVZEB - Traverso Vighy Zero Energy Building won the Illumni Infinity Award in the Daylighting category. They have been teaching at the main Italian Master courses of Lighting Design (IUAV, La Sapienza) and at the School of Architecture, University of Florida (UFL). Now directing at UFL, the “Daylight Thinking” international course about daylight and sustainable design.

Five days to go. The dark is calling. Are you ready?

The aims of Going Dark are to promote the town, the co-existence of light, architecture and darkness proving it is possible to celebrate architectural heritage whilst also considering and therefore protecting the night sky.

Here are 5 tips for shooting in low light from our resident photographer - Matteo De Bernardini.

📷 Ditch the handheld and use a solid tripod.

📷 Shoot during the "Blue Hour”.

📷 Keep your ISO low for maximum clarity.

📷 Shoot in RAW and master the highlights.

📷 Manage converging lines and perspective.

Not sure what any of this means? Don’t worry.

Matteo will be on hand throughout the workshop to capture your work but also to help you improve your night photography skills with a dedicated lecture and some high end equipment including tripods from Manfrotto to help you.

Delighted to welcome Radiant Architectural Lighting to Going Dark for the very first time as a technical partner!

For their debut on site in Tuscany, Radiant are setting up a dedicated, interactive installation on the site known to us as Giovanni's Tower :)

Using their flexible, modular architectural systems, they’re giving workshop participants direct, hands-on control to tune, adjust and dim low-lux optics in real time on an iconic vertical landmark.

It’s a rare chance to play with dynamic contrast, precise beam control, light effects engines and extreme dimming curve response under real night skies.

If you’re a lighting designer eager to get your hands on the controls and test the limits of low-impact, dark-sky-friendly design, join us in Tuscany for the 4th edition.
