The Ritual of Arrival
We believe Architecture is, above all, an act of listening.
In our proposal for the Gropius House, the visitor’s arrival is choreographed not merely as a functional transition, but as a ritual of pause + transition.
The experience begins with a protective masonry wall that greets the visitor, integrating a built-in bench to offer a moment of rest at the site’s point of arrival.
This wall acts as a measured screen, ensuring total privacy while establishing a composed, silent presence that recedes into the historical landscape.
Beyond this threshold lies the heart of the intervention: a translucent cylindrical volume wrapped in glass block.
Within this core, the atmosphere is defined by filtered light and a play between translucent and opaque surfaces.
This dialogue of materials balances concealment and revelation, transforming a utilitarian necessity into a calm and dignified user experience
By prioritizing spatial clarity and a simple, circular plan, the design ensures that accessibility is never an afterthought, but a fundamental component of the building’s dignity.
It is an architecture of silence, a “quiet guest” that serves its function with precision while honoring the spirit of the site.

A Tectonic Translation of the Bauhaus Spirit
Intervening within the historical fabric of the Gropius House demands more than mere formal nostalgia; it requires a deliberate posture of restraint and a critical dialogue with the existing.
Our competition entry, “A Quiet Guest,” rejects the ease of architectural mimicry, asserting instead that true respect for a Master’s legacy lies in the translation of core principles into a contemporary syntax.
The project avoids direct imitation by grounding its presence in a rigorous clarity of structure and compositional precision.
By organizing the program through primary geometries, a masonry wall, a slender pier, and a cylindrical core, the design achieves a measured balance between functional necessity and spatial dignity.
This layered assembly ensures that the architecture remains legible yet discreet, acting as a guest that recedes into the site’s background through continuity of alignment and proportion.
Furthermore, the intervention upholds the Bauhaus ideal of material honesty, utilizing the inherent properties of glass block and masonry to mediate between privacy and light without resorting to decorative excess.
Ultimately, this design seeks to contribute to the ongoing narrative of the Gropius House not through a carbon copy of the past, but through an ethic of thoughtful intervention and a commitment to the fundamental values of accessibility and spatial clarity.

A Quiet Guest.

Our latest competition entry for a public restroom at the iconic Gropius House.
Designed with a deliberate posture of restraint, the project embodies the theme of discretion, acting as a “guest” that recedes into the background of the site
The design draws directly from the volumetric cues of the Gropius-designed house and garage, seeking continuity through alignment and proportion. Rather than a competing object, the architecture is light, legible, and carefully attuned to its surroundings.
A cylindrical glass-block core meets masonry walls to balance privacy with a measured aesthetic.
An architecture that serves its function gently yet confidently, contributing to the ongoing narrative of a historical masterpiece.
