Mervin Raudabaugh had a choice that most of us will never face: $15 million from tech developers or the 261 acres he's farmed for over 60 years. At 86, he chose the land.

When AI data center companies came knocking with offers of $60,000 per acre, Raudabaugh could've walked away wealthy. Instead, he sold his development rights to a conservation program for $1.9 million, permanently protecting his farm, woodlands, and wetlands from being built over or dug up.

"I was not interested in destroying my farms," he said simply.

His decision speaks to something deeper happening across rural America right now. As tech companies race to build massive, energy-hungry data centers, they're targeting farmland—the very infrastructure that feeds communities and sustains ecosystems. For struggling farming families facing real financial pressure, the temptation is real. But Raudabaugh's choice reminds us that some things—a home, a legacy, the land itself—can't be measured in dollars. He's betting that protecting agricultural heritage for future generations matters more than any windfall.

🫡In a time when even a cup of tea ☕ costs ₹10–₹20, Prem Samal, a garment shop owner from Bhubaneswar, Odisha, has chosen a different path. Every night after finishing work, he serves hot milk tea, biscuits, and anti-mosquito sticks for just ₹1 to people who work while the rest of the city sleeps.

His tea reaches security guards, auto-rickshaw drivers, delivery workers, sanitation staff, hospital attendants, and many others who spend long hours on night duty.

During the winter season, he serves around 700 cups of tea every night, bringing warmth and comfort to those who need it most.

Many people ask why he charges ₹1 instead of offering everything for free. Prem believes that even a small payment helps preserve people's dignity and ensures the service is valued and shared fairly by everyone.

His mission began with distributing drinking water outside a hospital and later grew into this inspiring one-rupee tea initiative.

Prem Samal's story is a reminder that true generosity isn't measured by how much money you spend—it's measured by how many lives you touch.

Sometimes, a simple cup of tea can restore hope, spread kindness, and remind someone that they are not alone.

शत्रुओं का षड़यंत्र विफल

श्री गोकुलचन्द सक्सेना, खड़गपुर, लिखते हैं कि हमारे लोको दफ्तर के हैडक्लर्क और सुपरिटेण्डेण्ट से एक बार मेरी गरमा-गरम बहस हो गई। आपस में अशिष्ठ और अवांछनीय शब्दों का भी प्रयोग हो गया। उस समय तो दूसरे लोगों ने बीच-बचाव करा दिया और मामले को ऊपर जाने से रोक दिया पर मनों में काफी मन-मुटाव जम गया। मैंने अपनी ओर से उस कटु घटना की स्मृति को मन में से निकाल दिया था, पर वे लोग मन के बहुत मैले निकले। उन्होंने मेरे लिये स्थायी द्वेष धारण कर लिया और जब भी मौका मिलता मुझे नीचा दिखाने और नुकसान पहुँचाने की पूरी-पूरी कोशिश करते रहे। उच्च अधिकारियों के पास मेरी शिकायतों की एक बड़ी फाइल बन गई थी। कई बार मुझसे जवाब तलब हो चुके थे, चेतावनियाँ मिल चुकीं थीं। जुर्माना तनज्जुली या बदली की आशङ्का थी। नौकरी छूट जाने के भय से मैं सदा चिन्तातुर बना रहता था। ११५ रु. मासिक मिलते थे। यह नौकरी छूटने पर इसकी आधी तनुख्वाह पर भी कोई काम करने की आशा न थी। वृद्धा माता, पत्नी तथा बच्चे सभी को इस परिस्थिति ने चिन्ता में डाल रखा था, मेरा शरीर दिन पर दिन दुबला होने लगा।

इसी बीच मेरे श्वसुर का आना हुआ, उन्होंने बताया कि सङ्कट और चिन्ता की परिस्थिति उत्पन्न होने पर गायत्री का आश्रय लेना अमोघ उपाय है। वे स्वयं कई बार इसका स्वयं अनुभव कर चुके थे, उन्होंने वे सब घटनाएँ सुनाईं जिनमें गायत्री की कृपा से बड़ी-बड़ी विपत्तियों से पार हुए थे। इससे मेरी श्रद्धा बढ़ी और दूसरे ही दिन से उनके बताये हुए उपाय द्वारा गायत्री उपासना करने लगा।

जप करते हुऐ एक महीना बीत गया। दफ्तर में मालूम हुआ कि हमारे महकमें के सबसे बड़े अफसर दौरे पर आ रहे हैं। विरोधी लोगों ने मेरे विरुद्ध पूरा षड़यंत्र बना रखा था, मुझे बरखास्त करा देने के लिए उन्होंने पूरी तैयारी कर ली थी। ऐसा मालूम होता था कि इस संकट से बचना मुश्किल है।

नियत तारीख पर साहब का दौरा हुआ। दफ्तर के सभी प्रमुख कर्मचारियों ने मेरे विरुद्ध शिकायतों की एक बहुत बड़ी सूची पेश की, साथ ही सबूतों का एक बहुत बड़ा पुलन्दा भी साहब ने उन कागजातों को अपने पास रख लिया और आदमी भेजकर मुझे अपनी कोठी पर शाम को ६ बजे मिलने के लिए बुलाया। मैं गया और आदि से अन्त तक सारा ब्यौरा एक-एक शब्द की सच्चाई के साथ कह दिया। जो मुझसे भूलें हुई थीं वे भी बिना लाग-लपेट के एक-एक शब्द सच कह दीं। इस बात का जरा भी ध्यान न रखा कि अपनी ग़लतियाँ स्वयं मान लेने से नालायक करार दिया जा सकता हूँ और मुझे सजा मिल सकती है। आदि से अन्त तक सारी बात सुन लेने पर साहब मेरी सच्चाई पर बड़े प्रसन्न हुए और विरोधियों के षड़यन्त्रों पर उन्हें बहुत क्रोध आया। वे दौरा पूरा करके वापस चले गये।

कुछ दिन बाद उन्होंने फैसला भेजा। मेरे विरुद्ध षड़यन्त्र करने वाले सभी अग्रणी लोगों का तवादिला कर दिया गया। मुझे भी उस स्थान से बदला गया पर मेरी बदली तरक्की तथा सुविधा की जगह हो गई। साहब मुझ पर अत्यन्त प्रसन्न थे। उनसे मिलने मैं साल में एक दो बार अवश्य जाता रहता था, उनके जमान में मेरी काफी तरक्की हुई। २०० रु. जगह पर पहुँच गया। विरोधी मुझसे सदा जलते रहे, पर मेरा कुछ बिगाड़ न सके। यह गायत्री माता का ही प्रताप है। हमारा पूरा परिवार गायत्री का भक्त है और हमारे अनेक मित्र, परिचित एवं रिश्तेदार भी गायत्री की नियमित उपासना करते हैं।
