Scientists at Empa’s Cellulose & Wood Materials lab have developed luminescent wood infused with fungi, creating a potential natural lighting solution for urban spaces.

According to DesignBoom, researchers have integrated bioluminescent fungi into the structure of wood, allowing it to emit a gentle green glow. The fungi produce luciferin, the same compound responsible for glowing fireflies, making the wood a self-sustaining light source.

This innovation could revolutionize eco-friendly lighting, offering an alternative to traditional streetlights while reducing energy consumption. Researchers envision its use in decorative installations, portable lighting, and even sustainable urban infrastructure.

In March 2025, Italian scientists made history by successfully transforming light into a supersolid, a unique state of matter that combines the ordered structure of a solid with the frictionless flow of a liquid. This groundbreaking achievement, published in Nature, challenges previous ideas about how light behaves.

The researchers used a gallium arsenide semiconductor embedded with microscopic ridges to manipulate photons. By shining a laser into this structure, they generated polaritons—particles made up of both light and matter.

As the photon density increased, the polaritons formed satellite condensates, creating a spatial modulation characteristic of supersolidity. This phenomenon has profound implications for quantum physics, particularly in the development of stable qubits for quantum computing.

The team’s work lays the foundation for further exploration into quantum phases of matter in non-equilibrium systems. Their discovery could lead to advancements in optical technologies and revolutionize the field of quantum computing.
