Sugee Sukrut | Mumbai
The decisions that shape a building most are often the ones you would never point to. With Sugee Sukrut, two of them made all the difference.
The first is repetition. There is essentially one balcony here, an angular form with its chajja, carried up all twenty floors until that single move becomes the identity of the whole tower. It is how we approach high-rise design, where one carefully considered decision, multiplied many times over, does more for a building than several ideas competing for attention.
The second sits inside the homes. A lot of apartment plans lose space to a long passage before you ever reach a room, space you pay for but never really use. We planned these the other way, with the living room in the centre and bedrooms opening off either side, so there is almost no passage at all. In an area where every square foot carries the value it does here, that space goes straight back into the rooms you actually live in.
Neither move announces itself from the street, and that is usually the mark of good planning.
