Solar + DG: Better Payback ☀️

For factories, solar is usually evaluated based on how much it can reduce the electricity bill.

But when solar is integrated with a diesel generator, the value can improve further.

Here’s an example of how the economics can work:

✅ System cost: ₹38 lakh

✅ Electricity bill reduction: ₹9.7 lakh/year

During grid outages, solar can also help reduce DG loading.

Plan solar from day one ☀️🏭

When a factory is built, planning usually starts from the ground up.

But solar is often considered only at the end, once the roof, electrical systems and other infrastructure are already in place.
That can make installation more complicated than it needs to be.

A better approach is to treat solar as part of the factory design from the beginning.

That means thinking about:

✅ Roof orientation keeping the south-facing side suitable for solar

✅ Roof angle around 15° where appropriate

✅ Structural load capacity ensuring the roof can support the system

✅ Electrical planning keeping provisions ready for future solar integration

Just like fire safety, lighting and electrical systems are planned during construction, solar can be planned as another layer of the factory infrastructure.

The result is a factory that is solar-ready from day one, making future installation simpler, cleaner and more efficient.

Solar + DG for an Eco-Resort

An eco-resort in Palolem, Goa, was spending around ₹45,000 every month on diesel to meet its power requirements.

SUN360 approached the problem by combining solar generation with battery storage rather than relying on the DG for continuous operation.

The system included:

☀️ 3 kW solar plant

🔋 4 batteries

The difference was significant:

Before solar

⛽ Diesel cost: ₹45,000/month

After solar + batteries

⛽ Diesel cost: ₹7,500/month

That meant a reduction of ₹37,500 per month, or roughly 83% lower diesel expenditure.

The DG was no longer required to run continuously. It would operate for a short period in the evening, run the required loads, charge the batteries, and then shut down.

This is a useful example of how solar and battery storage can work alongside a DG to reduce diesel dependence, particularly for resorts and other locations with limited or unreliable grid power.

Solar + DG integration ☀️⚡

Did you know solar can be integrated with a diesel generator (DG) to help reduce diesel consumption during grid outages?

Here’s how it works:

⚡ When the grid fails, the DG starts and takes the load.

☀️ Once the DG is operating above 30% load, solar starts ramping up to supply the required load.

🔋 If solar generation is not enough, the DG can ramp up from 30% to 60%, 70% or 80%, depending on the load requirement.

💰 This can help reduce the DG loading from around 90–95% to 80–85%, potentially reducing diesel consumption and operating costs.

🏭 With multiple DGs, solar integration can also provide the flexibility to shut down two DGs while keeping the plant and machinery running on the remaining DGs and solar.

The result? Better utilisation of solar, lower DG loading, and potential diesel savings during grid outages. ☀️⚡

Actual DG loading, solar contribution and savings depend on the plant load, DG configuration and system design.

Solar savings for a plywood trading company ☀️

With nine stores across Goa and a warehouse, Navelcars Enterprises was paying electricity bills ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹35,000 per month at different locations.

The challenge was limited rooftop space at the stores.
