Suryamangalam Heritage
Koyamangalath House, an ancestral home with nearly two centuries of history, stands as a remarkable example of Kerala’s traditional architectural heritage.
Originally constructed around 1840 by Koyamangalath Ravunni Nair, a tax and revenues collector under the Zamorin, the house was built in the traditional Nalukettu style, centred around a Nadumuttam the open-to-sky courtyard that formed the heart of family life.
Over generations, the Tharavad witnessed the changing rhythms of family, agriculture, and everyday life. Paddy cultivation, coconut farming, cattle, and poultry were once integral to the life of the estate. Later, the house underwent careful renovations that introduced modern facilities while preserving its architectural character and cultural memory.
In 2023, the historic property was handed over to Suryamangalam Heritage and transformed into a heritage hospitality destination. The adaptive reuse project preserves the spirit of the ancestral home while giving the spaces a new life through hospitality.
Traditional elements, spatial character, landscape, and materiality have been retained and thoughtfully integrated, allowing the house to continue its story in a new chapter. Today, Suryamangalam Heritage stands as a landmark in the region where history, architecture, and hospitality come together.
