Surveying chains are traditional instruments used for linear distance measurement in land surveying. Different types of chains are designed for different surveying and engineering requirements.

📐 QUICK TOTAL STATION SETUP WITHOUT A BENCHMARK (BM)

What if a Benchmark (BM) is not available at your survey site? Don’t worry! You can establish relative elevations by using stable temporary points and a closed-loop approach.

🔹 Step-by-Step:

1️⃣ Select 3 Stable Points
Choose three suitable points A, B & C that can be used as temporary reference points.

2️⃣ Set Up the Total Station
Position the instrument properly, then ensure accurate centering and leveling.

3️⃣ Observe the Points
Measure distances and vertical angles to A, B & C and record all observations carefully.

4️⃣ Assign an Arbitrary RL
Give one stable point an assumed Reduced Level (RL), for example 100.000 m.

5️⃣ Calculate Relative RLs
Use the observed distances, vertical angles, instrument height and prism height to calculate the RLs of the other points.

6️⃣ Close the Loop
Check the loop A → B → C → A and verify the closing error. Adjust if required.

7️⃣ Use Temporary BMs
Once verified, A, B & C can serve as temporary reference points for further site work.

💡 IMPORTANT:
Without a known BM, the resulting elevations are relative/arbitrary, not tied to a national or project datum. For work requiring absolute elevations, connect the survey to a known benchmark or established control point.
