-Led Urban Regeneration for Climate Mitigation through Community Participation

This initiative promotes the conservation of Kolkata’s historic built and natural heritage as an interconnected living ecosystem. Through community sensitisation, skills training, and collaboration with local stakeholders and international partners, it seeks to revive traditional terracotta crafts for the conservation of temples along the Adi Ganga while strengthening local capacity for heritage management.

By integrating heritage conservation with environmental restoration, the project aims to regenerate historic urban areas, enhance climate resilience, support sustainable livelihoods, and improve quality of life. Preserving the past, improving the present, and fixing the future, it demonstrates how heritage can drive sustainable urban development.

As a part of this initiative, we organized a Patachitra workshop, culturally rooted within the Adi Ganga traditions, for the rural children of the Asurali village, 14 kms from the Diamond Harbour station. 20 children from the Friends Charitable Trust participated in the workshop.

The Ecology Sensitization Workshop organized within this program, along the Adi Ganga was a grand success. Over twenty participants, mostly women and nature enthusiasts from our collaborators, the All Women Nature Walks, Kolkata, walked along the banks of the now forgotten Adi Ganga in the wee hours of the morning, looking for birds, trees, and the condition of the stagnant water itself!
