Time and again, people across India have lost themselves in the magic of this singular voice. Whether singing of love or heartbreak, dazzling us with his yodelling, or lighting up the screen with his extraordinary presence, he remained unique, incomparable in every way.
Generations have changed, and music has travelled from cassette tapes to mobile screens; yet before Kishore Kumar’s voice, time itself seems to stand still even today.
On his 97th birth anniversary, we pay our deepest respects to the legendary Kishore Kumar.

I first saw the film "Teen Bhubaner Pare" during the winter holidays of 1969. I was just about to enter Class Eleven. I had grown up a bit and had even developed some "maturity" (or perhaps, a bit of cheeky wisdom). On top of that, it featured the Tanuja-Soumitra duo. While everyone in my family and neighborhood was going crazy over Uttam Kumar, I was a dedicated fan of Soumitra (had to be a little different, didn't I?), and to add to that, Tanuja! And those songs—oh, simply divine!

Now, I understand what a colossal talent, actor, and superstar Uttam Kumar truly was. I have lost count of how many times I have watched his film “ Nayak “ . He was an actor and a star. I also realize that the debates over who is better—Rafi or Kishore, Hemanta or Manna, Lata or Asha, Ali Akbar or Ravi Shankar, Pele or Maradona or Messi, Gavaskar or Sachin or Virat, Amitabh or Dilip Kumar or Shah Rukh or Aamir or Salman—are meaningless. They were all born with sky-high talent and immense blessings from the Almighty. Comparing them is merely the folly of ordinary people like us; they are all incomparable.

Anyway, in Bengali cinema during the 60s, you didn't really see much of the "twist." Films like Shankhabela, Aranyer Din Ratri, or Chirodiner had hints of it, but when Soumitra—with his shirt sleeves rolled up and pleated trousers—performed the Bengali "twist" on the Howrah Bridge to the song "Jibone Ki Pabona", it instantly became the anthem for every Bengali picnic.

Fifty-five years later, even today, when I hear this song, a smile inevitably appears on the faces of 72-year-olds like me, and my heart dances to the beat without me even realizing it. I have tried to sing the song here. If you enjoy it, that’s a bonus for me.

1969. Bengali modern music was witnessing the arrival of a new wave. It was a time when Rahul Dev Burman was not merely introducing fresh melodies—he was giving emotions an entirely new language. His success in Hindi cinema was already soaring, yet whenever he composed for Bengali songs, there seemed to be a different kind of magic in his music, a gentleness and intimacy that was uniquely his.

"Phire Eso Anuradha" is a timeless example of that magic.

Sachin Bhowmick's lyrics are remarkably simple, yet profoundly moving. Listening to them feels like opening the pages of someone's personal diary. There are no loud complaints, no dramatic expressions of sorrow—only a quiet longing for someone to return. Perhaps that is why, even after so many decades, the song still feels as relevant as ever. Times have changed, but love, longing, and the colours of memory remain unchanged.

There was an extraordinary sincerity in Rahul Dev Burman's voice. He never seemed to be merely singing; he was telling a story. Every word, every pause, every sigh carried an emotional depth that touched the listener's heart. This song is no exception. Each time I hear it, I am reminded that simplicity is, perhaps, the greatest form of artistry.

“Mone Pore Ruby Roy” felt like a new language of failed love, a new definition of Bengali music.
It was 1969. I was then in Class 10 at Ramakrishna Mission. There was not much opportunity there to listen to such songs. On Sundays, in the afternoon, I would go to the room of one of our English teachers and listen to Hindi songs on his record player. That was about it. Only when I came home during the holidays could I watch Hindi and Bengali films and listen to the songs. And during Puja, the microphones would play day and night, driving the neighbourhood mad. That was how I listened to and learnt music.
In 1969, Rahul Dev Burman sang his first Puja song. Of course, even before that, films like Teesri Manzil, Padosan, Pyar Ka Mausam, Waris and the intoxicating Puja songs composed by him and sung by Kishore Kumar had already shown us his calibre. I was already something of a devoted admirer.
But this song left me enchanted, amazed, stunned and speechless, all at once. Fifty-five years have passed since then. We have all grown old. But the song still remains that song of adolescent longing and heartbreak. I have heard that a woman named “Chhobi Ray” apparently “ditched” the lyricist, Sachin Bhowmick, and unknowingly made him write this wonderful song. Thank goodness she did!
Back then, I used to enjoy imitating Rahul Dev Burman’s voice while singing. This time too, I did the same. After this, I will sing quite a few more of his songs.

Timeless music is more than entertainment—it is a reflection of our cultural heritage.
Released in 1956, Mono Dilo Na Bodhu remains one of the memorable creations of Sachin Dev Burman. Written by Robi Guha Mazumder and both composed and sung by S.D. Burman, the song beautifully captures the simplicity and emotional depth that continue to touch listeners across generations.
As we celebrate this evergreen classic, we are reminded that preserving our musical legacy is just as important as creating the future.
Listen, reminisce, and let this timeless melody speak to your heart.

Every timeless song carries the fragrance of the era that gave it birth.

"Barne Gandhe" is one such timeless masterpiece. Released in 1969 as part of Sharad Arghya, this evocative composition by S. D. Burman, with lyrics by Mira Dev Burman, celebrates the colours, fragrance, and quiet rhythms of nature through music of remarkable grace.

Even today, its lyrical beauty continues to inspire listeners, reminding us that the finest works of art transcend generations and preserve the soul of a culture.
