The century plant (Agave americana) gets its name from a myth that it blooms once every 100 years. In reality, it lives for 10 to 30 years before sending up a spectacular, towering stalk of yellow flowers. As a monocarpic plant, it blooms only once in its lifetime and dies shortly after, leaving behind offshoots, or "pups," to continue growing.
