🔬 NORTHEAST’S BIODIVERSITY AND TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE CAN DRIVE SCIENTIFIC INNOVATION
The BRIC–Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development, Imphal, in collaboration with Vijnana Bharati, organised the “Science for Viksit Bharat” programme on 23 August 2026.
The event brought together scientists, researchers, academicians and students to discuss how science, technology and innovation can contribute towards building a developed and self-reliant India by 2047.
A major focus of the programme was the Northeast’s rich biodiversity and traditional knowledge systems. Speakers highlighted that these resources can support bioresource-based research, innovation and entrepreneurship when scientific institutions, universities and communities work together.
The programme also called for cultivating scientific temper among young people and encouraging them to participate in research and innovation. The VVM 2026–27 brochure was released, while an awardee of the VVM National Camp 2025–26 was felicitated.
The message is especially relevant for Arunachal Pradesh, which possesses exceptional biological diversity and generations of community knowledge relating to medicinal plants, agriculture, forests and natural-resource management. However, this potential must be developed responsibly, with proper documentation, scientific validation and fair participation of the communities that preserve such knowledge.
Arunachal’s universities, research institutions, Biodiversity Management Committees and startup ecosystem should be encouraged to develop collaborative projects in areas such as medicinal plants, sustainable agriculture, natural products and biodiversity-based livelihoods.
The PIB release relates to an awareness and scientific-engagement programme in Imphal. It does not announce any new funding scheme or Arunachal-specific project.
