Assam-type architecture developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to the devastating 1897 Assam earthquake. After the disaster, British engineers, influenced by the seismic studies of Japanese seismologist Fusakichi Omori, studied traditional Assamese houses and adapted them using modern engineering principles. This led to a hybrid construction system consisting of timber frames with reed or bamboo infill and mud plaster. The lightweight and flexible nature of these materials helped buildings resist earthquake forces, while raised plinths improved protection against floods. Due to their proven resilience, the British Public Works Department standardized this construction type. As a result, Assam-type houses became widely used for both government buildings and private residences across Assam.
