Sir M. Visvesvaraya, whose full name is Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, is considered one of the greatest civil engineers India has ever produced. Born on September 15, 1861, in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka, he worked for the Public Works Department of British India. During his tenure, he brought about significant changes in India's engineering and technology sectors. One of his most notable contributions is the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysuru, which was one of the largest irrigation projects of its time. Additionally, the floodgate system he designed was of great help to Hyderabad in controlling floods.
Beyond his role as an engineer, Visvesvaraya also demonstrated his administrative prowess. Serving as the Diwan of Mysuru from 1912 to 1918, he implemented major reforms in the state's industrial, educational, and economic sectors. The University of Mysore and the State Bank of Mysore are results of his foresight. September 15, his birthday, is celebrated in India as 'Engineers' Day' in honor of his invaluable engineering and technical contributions to the nation's progress.
