Designing on peat soil demanded a departure from conventional foundation approaches.
An innovative grid foundation system inspired by railway track load distribution principles was adopted to enhance load dispersion while minimizing foundation stresses. Combined with a lightweight steel superstructure and groundwater flow provisions, the system was engineered specifically for challenging subsoil conditions.

Engineering Beyond Conventional Solutions

This Ayurvedic Clinic at Poothotta, Ernakulam, is constructed on challenging peat soil with very low bearing capacity.

Instead of piles, an innovative grid foundation system inspired by railway track load distribution was adopted to spread loads efficiently while allowing groundwater movement beneath the structure.

To further reduce foundation demands, a lightweight steel structural system was used above ground floor level.

A reminder that successful structural design is not always about choosing the strongest solution—it’s about choosing the most appropriate one for the site conditions.
