On World Architecture Day and World Habitat Day, we spotlight our housing projects. A house is never just a necessity, but also a keeper of memory and a base that people come back to. Chennai’s long, intense summers and high humidity mean every material choice has to answer for how much heat it lets inside the building.

At team3, this has shaped two very different responses, depending on the typology. At Casagrand Utopia, a residential development, jali screens are used in the utility areas, allowing ventilation and daylight into service zones while cutting direct solar exposure. At Prodapt Inspire, a commercial office building, the response is more engineered: a jacketed layer of aluminium fins and wood, angled to the site’s solar path and paired with curtain glazing, controlling glare and heat gain while still letting daylight into the workspaces.

Density does not have to mean less room to breathe.

At Casagrand Utopia in Chennai, close to half the site is set aside for courtyards, pools, play areas, and spaces for senior citizens. Every housing block looks into a landscaped courtyard, so amenities are easily accessible, and pedestrian paths are layered with planters, water bodies, and seating to slow people down.

At Casagrand Utopia in Chennai, the elevation combines projecting bay windows, boxed balcony elements, and jaali screens that conceal service shafts while adding texture to the mass.

Individually simple, together they give the building its rhythm.

Some sites come with a built-in constraint that ends up shaping the whole design.

At Casagrand Utopia in Chennai, proximity to the airport capped the maximum height at 15 metres.

Instead of working around that limit, the design worked with it. Five housing blocks of five storeys each are arranged around green courtyards, keeping vehicles below in the basement and freeing up the entire ground level for people. Nearly half the 10-acre site is left open for space and community use.

What inspires curiosity at five differs from what supports concentration at fifteen. Learning environments for younger user groups tend to lean into colour, texture, and openness- spaces built to invite movement and play.

As students grow older, the palette settles, textures quieten, and the space starts making room for focus instead. Nature runs through both ends of that scale. Daylight, air, and a reason to step outside do as much for a young child’s attention as they do for a teenager’s concentration.

Designing for children means designing for how they move, play, and discover.

At AWE India School, every space responds to a different mode of learning. The junior library creates a calm, inviting environment through warm materials, soft colours, and varied seating that encourages children to read, explore, and linger.

In contrast, the integrated science lab is planned as a hands-on learning environment where curiosity is nurtured through interaction and experimentation.
